AVICE.
Though the voice of modern schools
Has demurred,
By the dreamy Asian creed
Tis averred,
That the souls of men, released
From their bodies when deceased,
Sometimes enter in the beast, —
Or a bird.
I have watched you long, Avice, —
Watched you so,
I have found your secret out;
And I know
That the restless ribboned things,
Where your slope of shoulder springs,
Are but undeveloped wings
That will grow.
When you entei in a room,
It is stirred
With the wayward flashing flight
Of a bird;
And you speak—and bring with you
Leat and sun-ray, bud and blue,
And the wind-breath and the dew
At a word.
When you call to me my name,
TheD again
When I heard your single cry
In the lane,
All the sounds was as the “sweet”
Which the birds to birds repeat
In their thank song to the heat
After rain.
When you sang the “Schwalbenlied,”
’Twas absurd,—
But it seemed no human note
That I heard ;
For your strain had all the trills,
All the little shakes and stills,
Of the over-song that rills
From a bird.
You have just their eager, quick
“Airs de tete,”
All their flush and fever-heat
When elate ;
Every bird-like nod and beck,
And a bird’s own curve of neck
When she gives a little peck
, To her mate.
When you left me, only now,
In that furred,
Puffed, and feathered Polish dress,
1 was spurred
Just to catch you, 0 my Sweet,
By the bodice trim and neat,
Just to feel your heart a-beat,
Like a bird.
Yet, alas I Love’s light you deign
But to wear
As the dew upon your plumes,
And you care
Not a whit for rest or hush ;
But the leaves—the lyric gush,
And the wing power and the rush
Ot the air.
So I dare not woo you, Sweet,
For a day,
Lest I loose you in a flash,
As I may;
Did I tell you tender things,
You would shake your sudden wings;
You would start from him who sings,
And away.

John King, the first Englishman who
signed the total abstinence pledge, is now
an old man, and without a dollar. Terrible

“Bid you pull my nose in earnest, sir?”
“Certainly 1 did, sir.” “It was well you did
sir, for l don’t allow anybody to joke with
me in that way.”
A young man asked a young lady her
age, when she replied : “Six times seven
and seven times three, added to my age,
will exceed six times nine and four, as
double my age exceeds twenty .” The young
man said he thought she looked much old

“Do you go to school now, Charlie?” ask
ed an uncle of his nephew.
“Yes, sir; I had a fight to-day too,” re
plied the boy. *
“You had? Which whipped?”
“Oh, I got whipped,” he answered with
great frankness.
“Was the other boy bigger than you ?”
asked his uncle.
“No, he was littler.”
“Well, how come you to let a littler boy
whip you ?”
“Oh you see be was much madder nor I
was.”

“Buy me a little sister without saying

INDUSTRIAL LOVE-MAKING.
Two young turtle doves, wandering with
pinions entwined among the labyrinths and
bowers of the Exposition building in Cin
cinnati, were heard to coo thusly :
She—“Do you indeed love tne true ?”
He—“ True as the needle to the sewing
machine, or the most accurate case of math
ematical apparatus on exhibition. When l
look at you my heart warms like a heating
stove, and beats like a steel hammer.”
She—“l can believe you, theu !”
He—“ Doubt burglar-proof safes and pla
ted ware, wax-work, millinery, and safety
valves; but uever doubt my luve.”
She—“ Dearest Claw’d !”
He—“ Your love-lit glances stir the waters
of my heart like a turbiue wheel. You are
the sublimitca agricultural machinery of my
spiritual exposition. You are the cultivator
of my moral existence, the seed drill for
grains of purest thought, the reaper of gol
den harvests of affection, and the mower
well, more to me thau all the other girls in
Cincinnati.”
She (administering a roguish fan tap,)
“Perhaps I cun prove you a thrasher, too ”
He—“ Well, and if you do, you will find
me as docile in your hands as pine wood in
grasp ot wood workers, or dilapidated tex
tiles in rag machinery.”
She—“ Your heart will never wander from
me ?”
He—“My sweet su ar evaporator, as soon
expect to see a patent saw-mill wandering in
the gallerias, or steam boilers and tobacco
machines promeuading arm-iu-arin through
the hall. You, and you alone, occupy the
apartments of my heart You are like ten
ant, guest and regular boarder, besides be
ing furniture, upholstery and miscellaneous
house furnishing goods ”
She—“l must —I will believe you ! Ah,
Claw’d your words are dearer to me than a
season ticket to the exposition, and sweeter
than the sweetest bonnet in the millinery
department, or honey in the curry-comb. —
But can I rely upon your constancy ?”
He —“Constant as the fall of water over
yon cascade, and in devotion as regular as
a set of artificial teeth. If you refuse to
believe me and smooth out the wrinkles iu
my heart with your spiritual ironing appa
ratus, you will uiuDgle and wringer !”
She—“Do you respect as well as love ?”
He—“l respect you because you do uot
despise washing apparatus and cooking
stoves; but disdain chemicals, paints and
cotton. You would rank patterns in the la
dies department, and for appearance there
is no such carriage as yours iu the class of
land conveyance.”
She—“ See the inconstant thiong how
they flirt from one object of interest to an
other; now stoppiug to fondle a pegging
machine or an automatic boiler feeder, aud
again pausing to inhale the fragrance of
washing machines and plug tobacco. So it
is, I fear, with men who profess to love.”
He—“ Dearest Pauline, you wrong me.—
In comparison with you, all other women
appear as a ten-eent hack ride from the
post office coiner. They are but toys and
fancy goods to me, while to them I am but
a refrigerator. There is no mining appara
tus that can undermine you in frames in
which your image alone is encased, and if
you will place my name upou your bocks as
a life partner, you may count me us both
stationary and binding.”
After such extravagant courting as the
above, we can’t see what is to prevent this
devoted couple from going through life’s in

HAIR
Every year increases the populari
ty of this valuable Hair Preparation;
which is due to merit alone. We
can assure our old patrons that it is
kept fully up to its high standard;
and it is the only reliable and perfect
ed preparation for restoring Gray
or Faded Hair to its youthful color,
making it soft, lustrous, and silken.
The scalp, by its use, becomes white
and clean. It removes all eruptions
and dandruff, and, by its tonic prop
erties, prevents the hair from falling
out, as it stimulates and nourishes
the hair-glands. By its use, the hair
grows thicker and stronger. In
baldness, it restores the capillary
glands to their normal vigor, and
will create anew growth, except in
extreme old age. It is the most eco
nomical Hair Dressing ever used,
as it requires fewer applications,
and gives the hair a splendid, glossy
appearance. A. A. Hayes, M.D.,
State Assayer of Massachusetts, says,
“The constituents are pure, and care
fully selected for excellent quality;
and I consider it the Best Prepa
ration for its intended purposes.”

they were painfully afflicting, have been radically
cured in such great numbers in almost every sec
tion of the country, that the public scarcely need
to be informed of its virtues or uses.
Scrofulous poison is one of the most destruc
tive enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and
unfelt tenant of the organism undermines the con
stitution, ami invites the attack of enfeebling or fa
tal diseases, without exciting a suspicion of its
Sresenee. Again, it seems .to breed infection
irougheut the body, and then, on some favorable
occasion, rapidly develop into one or other of its
hideous forms, either on the surface or among the
vitals. In the latter, tubercles may be suddenly
deposited in the lungs or heart, or tumors formed
in the liver, or it shows its presence by eruptions
on the skin, or fonl ulcerations on some part of
the body. Hence the occasional use of a bottla
of this Sarsaparilla is advisable, oven when no
active symptoms of disease appear. Persons af
flicted with the following complaints generally
find immediate relief, and, at length, cure, by the
use of this SARSAPARILLA: St. Antho
