THE GAZETTE.
Wednesday, February 25, 1874.
Thanks to Hon. A. H. Stephens for a
copy of Hon. Matt. Carpenter’s speech
on Louisiana affairs.
—
Ex-Governor Jenkins has resigned the
presidency of the two banks in Augusta
which he has held for sume years past.
Hon. A. H. Stephens was quite ill in
Washington last week. We are glad to
know that later dispatches report him
convalescent.
South Carolina is working to redeem
herself from Radical missule by bring
ing in white labor. We hear reports of
a large number, mostly Germans, having
already reached her borders.
Demorest’s Monthly for March is a
particularly attractive number. Demo
rest is recognised authority in all ques
tions of fashion, and to ladies of taste
it is indispensable.
We club the Gazette with Demorest’s
Monthly at $4.50 — strictly in advance.
Orders will not be forwarded until the
money is advanced.
Wilson’s Herald of Health for Febru
ary shows a steady improvement in in
terest and good management. The in
troduction of the various departments
of intelligence is a popular feature and
one that will increase the usefulness of
the work. J. Stainback Wilson, Atlan
ta, Ga. $2 a year.
A joint committee has been appointed
by Congress to investigate the manage
ment of affairs in the District of Colum
bia—certainly a Herculean task for the
committee, as the Augean stable could
not have been in a worse condition.
The first Governor of the District, un
der the changed form of government,
Cooke and the property holders to a turn,
and then turned himself over into bank
ruptcy, and then turned the people over
to the tender mercies of a very wicked
Shepherd, who, five years ago, was a
violent Democrat and a recognised bank
rupt.
The people of Elbert, Hart and Frank
lin will certainly achieve a most signal
triumph if they finally succeed in their
efforts in building the railroad to Toc
coa—the prospects of which, we are glad
to know, are flatteringly certain. They
have not only encountered opposition,
fierce and strong, from foes without, but
they have also had to battle against op
posing elements, no less fierce and strong,
at home. This will be surprising to
communities deprived, like ourselves,
of railroad facilities. To a people sepa
rated from the world so long, paying
high prices for all they had to purchase,
and receiving lowest pri< es in selling,
one would think the first feasible pro
project for a means to relieve themselves
of these burdensome ills would be unan
imously seized and pushed to a success
ful completion.
That opposition should come from
outside was naturally to be expected.
It is hard to break up old commercial
ties—ties pleasant to all concerned—
without meeting opposition from those
whose pecuniary interests would suffer
materially from the proposed change.
True we do not contend that all the ben
efits have been on one side. We have
fortunately been connected commercial
ly with a class of business me a who,
for ability, integrity, and social qualities,
are inferior to none that we have encoun
tered anywhere ; but doubtless new bus
iness relations could be elsewhere estab
lished that would be equally advantag
eous. But why our own people should
oppose an enterprise calculated beyond
all question to benefit the whole commu
nity, we are at a loss to suifcise. And
not only opposition at home has had
to be met and overcome, but also an in
difference, as damaging and as unex
plainable. That a railroad does not run
by a man’s door cannot be regarded as
a legimate excuse for opposition or in
difference. That would be a costly road
whose curves and crooks were made to
satisfy these demands in a county like
ours, and we fear the present murmurs
would be greatly magnified when the
demand was made for loosing the purse
strings.
But the most contemptible opposition
of all is found in the organisation itself,
which, because an expenditure of two
hundred thousand dollars—to come al
most entirely from abroad—will not be
incurred to run the road by a forty
thousand dollar plantation, must needs
throw all possible obstructions in the
way of the enterprise, and after imagin
ing that they have thwarted the work,
boastfully declare that they have “ killed
it too dead to skin.”
But, if it will be any satisfaction to
those gentlemen to know it, we can tell
them the corpse is more powerful to-day
than it was while invested with life, and
their course will receive the full measure
of odium it deserves.

A FERTILIZER
For sll a Ton
After years of study and numerous experi
ments, Mr J. R. BL.tCK ot Abheril.e county,
S. C., has perfected a compound for the soil
which contributes all the elements necessary to
the rapid growth and full development of cot
ton and grain, at the same time permanently en
riching the soil.
BRACK’S COMPOUND is notthe invention of
a Northerner, but of one born and reared where
cotton was cultivated. The Compound was
used in 1373 for the fir.-t time, and in every in
stance with the most gratifying results.
John Martin, a well known citizen of Ander
son county, S. C., used Black's Compound on
corn and cotton, and could see no marked dif
ference between that and other standard fertili
zers. He will continue to use it.
G. F. Willis, of Abbeville cour ty, used this
Compound side by side with the Etiwau, and
found it fully equal to the latter.
