LAWLESSNESS IN PIEROE COUNTY.
A letter from Blackshear to the Sa
vannah Advertiser states that a short
time after the trial and acquittal of R.
W. Carpenter, who was charged with the
.murder of Walter L. Cole, in that place
1 n March last, he, Carpenter, was served
through the post office with a notice
that his life would be in danger if he re
mained there and warning him to leave.
Carpenter paid no attention to this
warning, and, until Thursday night,
thought there was nothing in it. About
11 o’clock that night a party of armed
men went to his place and attempted to
go to the house, but on opening the yard
gate they were met and their progress
resisted by Carpenter’s yard dog. One
of the party shot the dog, and the noise
of the dog and the report of the gun
aroused Carpenter and gave him a
knowledge of his danger. He immedi
ately called for assistance, which in a
few minutes brought together several of
his neighbors and caused the armed par
ty to leave. A piece of paper was found
in the yard conveying the following
warning:
R. W. Carpenter, the murderer of Cole:
You have been warned to leave this
town. We mean that yon shall leave it at
once or your life. Notice close to morrow
and you will see what we mean. An or
ganization of citizens large enough will
be found in town and from the country
to protect our families and property.
We intend that you shall go, or death
shall be your fate.
[Signed] Citizens.

The Savannah News: Our community
will learn with deep regret of the death
of Mary Palmer, the eldest daughter of
Samuel B. Palmer, Esq., of this city,
which sad event occurred at Clarksville,
Ga., on Wednesday last, the 10th instant.
Several weeks since Miss Palmer, who
was attending school at the place men
tioned, was out walking with a number
of her pupil companions, and in passing
near a piece of woous which had recently
been burned her dress caught lire from
a spark, and in a few seconds she was
completely enveloped in flames. Her
companions rushed quickly to her arsis
tance, and in a short time suceeded in
extinguishing them, not, however, be
fore she was terribly and fatally burned.
Her parents and friends, however, in
dulged the hope that with careful nurs
ing she might ultimately recover, but
their fond hopes were blighted. After
lingering several weeks death released
her from all mortal pain, and her pure
young soul passed from earth on Wed
nesday last. Miss Palmer was in liet
seventeenth year, just budding into a
glorious womanhood of unusual promise.
Her afflicted father has the heartfelt
sympathy of his many friends in this
cily.
Size of Barrels.— A President of an ag
ricultural society calls attention to the
fact that there are in a standard legal
barrel only 100 quarts, while the ordinary
flour barrel, most in use among farmers
in the sale of potatoes and apples, con
tains nearly one eighth more. Farmers
sell their produce in flour barrels and mer
chants transfer the same barrels, making a
profit in quantity as well as on the price.
In the sales of 800 barrels of potatoes
from a farm, thejproprietor loses 100 bar
rels, worth $250, for which he might as
well be paid. The middleman, not the
consumer, profits by this. Farmers, see
to it that you employ the 100 quart bar
rel hereafter.—Pacific llural Press.
Longstreet.— lt is a pity to spoil a
sensation, especially such a one as that
pathetic account of Gen. Longsreet re
turning to Georgia, and his retirement
from politics to engage inj sheep raising.
But the truth of history compels the
Neff Orleans Times;: to state that the poi
son referred to is not in Georgia, hasn’t
been there for some time, isn't in the
sheep-raising business, and is in New Or
leans, where, at latest accounts, be had
concluded to remain for some time to
come.
A Horrible Affair—A special from
Topeka, Kansas, says: Near Helena,
Colorado, on the Bth instant, thirty vigi
lants went to the house of one Gibbs,
and on his refusing to deliver himself to
them to be banged, set fire to the house,
in which were Gibbs, two women and
several children. C<ibbs leaped out
through tho flames with a revolver and
shot three of the party dead and wound
ed a fourth, when the rest took lo their
heel and fled. Gibbs had recently been
acquitted on the charge of murder, and
the vigilants proposed to take a summa
ry appeal from the decision which set
him at liberty.

Avery liberal contract, which we have

to place their celebrated machines in
many families throughout the country.
So fine an opportunity to secure a first ,

to extend greatly its circulation and
thus help to increase its influence. We j

for us. Reader, can you not form a j
a club in your neighborhood and secure
this sewing machine premium. A few
hours of well-directed effort will obtain
it. Postmasters in the smaller towns
and villages can, with a little thought
and effort, easily send us the requisite
number of names. Has the parsonage a
sewing machine? li not, call upon a
few ladies and gentlemen of the congro

them to help. In the congregation 100
names can with little difficulty be se
cured. Send us the S2OO and we will

of the 100 subscribers, which will pay
them the full value of their subscrip

ing Machine. How easily a club can be
formed in the Masonic or Temperance
Society or the Grange? Is there not
depending upon your society some poor
widow to whom a sewing mach'ne would
be for years to come a blessing ? Pass
the subscription paper. One hundred
persons subscribing for this journal at
.$2.00 each, will secure for themselves,
without any extta charge, the paper for
one year and a most valuable present for
some needy family. Try it, friends.
Don’t wait! Begin the work at once.
Send us word that you have undertaken
the formation of such a club.
