Surprising.
Something must be the matter among,
the gubernatorial aspirants. Nearly a
month lias elapsed without the naming
of anew candidate. There must be a
clog somewhere ; because we are posi
tive there are seine few citizens of the
State whose names have not been men
tioned. We move the appointment of
an investigating committee, with Col.
Walsh as chairman, to thoroughly sift
the matter, and find out what unprinci
•pled means are being used to rob the
.people of one of their most sacred
rights.
EXPERIMENTS ON RATS.
An amusing experiment on rats was
recently perpetrated in a mercantile
house in Petersburg, Vt. Two of these
had been trapped, and it was
decided try the effect of whiskey on
them. Party drops were administered
to each of them, and the result
awaited. They were placed in a wide
deep box, into which some trash and
gravel had been thrown. A saucer of
whiskey w T as also placed therein. For a
while all was silent, each having seated
himself in a corner, where ho remained
as morose as a rat could be. By and
by, however, the liquor began to work.
The rats began to smile and play with
their tails ; then to jump up and squeak;
then to fall down and roll over. Final
ly one of them found the saucer, and,
with the peculiar curiosity of their race,
dipped ids nose into it. He drank, and
the noise of his drinking brought his
companion to his side. They drank as
though they were really fond of the stuff,
and it is estimate I more than eighty
drops. And now they got glorious.
They kissed each other —an act two rats
were never guilty of before. They wres
tied and kickvd up shines generally.
They revisited the saucer, and got mad
over it. A rough and tumble fight en
sued, which lasted until both were ex
hausted. Then they remained for awhile
each with a paw to his nose, grinning at
each other. Finally they both fell
asleep, and while both were gloriously
unconscious, a terrier was dropped be
side them.
Tho curtain falls.
A SINGULAR FISH.
' A strange fish is found in the noisy
maigre. It makes a strange cooing
moan, accompanied by a sharp croak
that can be heard at a depth of one
hundred and fifty feet. The fish attains
a length of about six feet and weighs
forty pounds. What these sounds are
for we know not, but on tiie principle
that all things are for some particular
purpose they must have a meaning.
That the imperfect voice of the fins is
used to express discontent and pain I
Wo no cloubt, as- Ttr numerous ex
periments on a fish found in the Gulf of
Mexico, called the grunt, 1 found that
tho voice was used and modulated as
with other animals. When* touched
with the knife the grunts that it gave
vent to fairly rose to a shriek, and dying
its moans and sobs were almost disagree
ably human.
I shall never forget the first one of
these veritable porkers that I caught.
Tliinkiug that my bait needed replenish
ing, I hauled in and found nicely hooked
a grunt, and no sooner had I placed
him in the boat than he commenced a
a series of grunts and sobs that bade
fair to take me by storm. Now he
would make a low noise, and gradually
swell the “melody,” and finally hurl at
me such a blast of entreaties, all of
which were produced without struggle,
that my better nature was aroused, and
I made haste to toss him back, and as he
disappeared he uttered a squeak which,
together with the splash, sounded to me
like a bona fide “thank, you,” and I have
no doubt but what it was.

Somebody sends us a copy of the
Nashville Union and American with a
marked article describing the improve
ments made and to be made upon the
capitol grounds of Tennessee. The
words “what Georgia should also do”
are written on the margin of the paper.
The trouble with Georgia, at present, is
that she has no capitol grounds. Two
dirty streets form the prospect from the i
rickctty Opera House in which the Leg
•islature meets and the State oflieials
have their pffioes.f gTho grounds sur
rouding the old capitol in Milledgeville
are extensive, handsome and susceptible
of great improvement. When the cap
tol is changed to Milledgeville the Ten
nessce plan may be tried.
