HART COUNTY DEPARTMENT.
BY OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.

CARI3TMAS HOLIDAYS
Passed off very pleasantly in this com
munity. On Christmas eve night the
Christinas tree gave general satisfaction
as it was literally crowded with pres
tuts, and there being a large turn-out—
the church was filled to overflowing.
We have not Heard of any that were
forgotten, and all both large and small
shared in the distribution. The writer
of this, amongst other presents, received
a cod pipe, which he prizes very highly.
A gentleman in the county, an old bach
elor, received a box of Tutt’s liver pills,
an 1 another received a nice package con
taining a cake of soap and a fine-tooth
comb.
This is only a sample of a few of the
presents—some-of them being very fine.
The tree was a very beautiful one, and
we heard it estimated was worth at least
SSOO.
The fantastic ride on Christmas day
was a success, and consisted of about
forty horsemen, dressed in very conceiv
able shape and fashion. After parading
all the streets of our town, they drew
up in solid column in front of the court
house, where they were greeted by a
speech from A. G. McCurry, Esq., who,
iu his usual happy and effective style,
welcomed them as ambassadors of
“Rex,” and invited them to share in the
festivities and hospitalities of the town.
The day passed off very pleasantly',
a noticeable feature being the closing of
the bar rooms, which was voluntarily
done by the same, greatly to their credit,
thereby rendering liquor comparatively
scarce, in consequence of which there
was little or no intoxication. During
the week there was a ball given by the
young men in the courthouse, which is
reverted to with much pleasure by all
who participated- There were also par
ties and \ rivate entertainments given
during the week, all showing that there
was no lack of enjoyment by the people
of Hartwell during the past holidays.
NEW YEAR.
We greet the readers of oar column
with a happy new year, and make the re
solve with the first number of The Ga
zette for 1876 to give a faithful record
of all the events of interest in our coun
ty, and to render our task more perfect
we will be thankful for the <:o operation
of the people of this county, and any
items of interest, or questions of infor
mation for their general good will be
given to our readers. In order to ren
der this task more pleasant and inter
esting we solicit an increase in our sub
scription list and propose to furnish ev
ery family in Hart county with a copy of
The Gazette for the low price of s‘2 per
annum.
We also respectfully solicit contribu
tions of news or matters ©f interest to
our paper. We hope every citizen of
Hart county will have a kindly feeling
for The Gazette, and lend a helping
hand in making it useful and profitable
and a vehicle of general information.
Let each one now taking the paper se
cure an additional subscriber, and by
this means an increased interest will be
felt and manifested in ita usefulness.
OUR SCHOOL.
Under the able management of Prof.
M. Y. Looney and his highly gifted lady,
Mrs. A. B. Looney, our school commen
ces next Monday, 10th inst.
The school will be a large and flour
ishing one, and from all indications will
be greatly ahead of last session. We
hear of applications daily of parents de
siring board for their children, a great
many of whom have secured places.
It is very important that those desir
ing to enter pupils should do so with
the opening of the school, as they all
get started together in their studies,
thereby securing increased advantages.
We hope to see a large turn out next
Monday morning the like of which was
never seen before in Hartwell.
On the opening of the school the pa
rents and guardians of children are cor
dially invited to be present. Arrange
ments are also perfected for a music
class for the present session.

E. B. BENSON & CO.
This enterprising firm are offering
new inducements to customers for their
trade during the next year.
They keep a large and varied assort
ment of goods, and are constantly re
placing with new ones. They have done
by far the largest trade in the county
over any other house.
WILLIAMS & BENSON.
The firm of Williams & Benson was
dissolved January 1,1875, by mutual con
sent, J. B. Benson retiring. The busi
ness will be conducted by Mr. J. B. Wil
liams, who will be pleased to see his old
customers at his new stand on the
square
ARRIVALS.
Mr. Win. B. Dooly has moved to town
during the past week ; also our efficient
tax receiver, Mr. J. M. Thornton, has
become a resident of our village.
Both these gentlemen bring consider
le accessions to our school, and with
I asure we welcome them to our midst.
MARRIED,
On the 23d December, 1875, at the
residence af the Hon. J. W. Jones, by
Rev. Benj. Thornton, Moses R. Brown
to Miss Lucy O. Thornton.
Also, on the same day. at the resid
ence of Mr. Frank M. Roberts, by Rev.
James H. McMullen, Ira Myers to Miss
Mary Pearman, all of this county.
The Flatwoods is said to be in a per
feet lob lolly, cursed by the recent hard
rains.
Educated Sausages. —lt pains ns to
perceive that some of our exchanges
are speaking lightly of the subject of sau
sage. The Chicago Times says: The
mysterious loss of a number of valauble
dogs, from a thirteen ounce black and
tan to a 110 pound Newfoundland, has
set Milwaukie people to think that a
sausage inspector is needed in this
town. The Whitehall Times makes
matters worse by saying; Now is the
time to lay in your sausage. Well
educated links that will sit up and
bark for a cracker are now selling for
eighteen cents per pound.
Ex-provisional Governor James John
son, of Columbus, unable longer to
withstand the continued pressure, has
reluctantly consented for his name to
be used as an independent candidate for
Governor, and the measure of happi
ness of Georgia Radicals is full.
