beer, favored by some friend with a copy es the
first issue of the** Oregon Spectator,'’ the first
newspaper established in the Oregon Territory !
Here it is, all the way from oOr new settlement
opposite China ! The motto iff the sheet is,
“ Westward the Star of Empire takes its way,”
and we should not be surprised if the settlers in
our far-off territory were looking around for some
lone star ot an island in the Pacific to annex to
their State; or. rather, to throw the light of em
pire over it.- The number before us is dated
February sth, 1846 and contains a copy of the
constitution passes by the Legislature of the
Territory ; also, an act to prevent the introduc
tion and sale of ardent spirts in Oregon. The
editor, William G. T ’Vault, says: in his open
ing leader, that the paper will be neutral in poli
tics, and devoted to the general interest of the
Territory; but he at the time informs them that
he is a Democrat of the Jedcrsonian school.
Besides being editor of the“ Spectator,” he is
1 prosecuting attorney and Postmaster General ot
‘he Territory. T’Vauit. judging from the sta
tions he holds. must be a man of vault- ing am

them, the jar closed tight, and in a fortnight de
licious hard pickles are produced, as green as the
day they were upon the vines.—The beet vine

police, on Monday next, to* the river bank, and
; that they arrest all persons crossing with bat

■deem it necessary to have additional assistance,
that he call on the Mayor and Aldermen- and all
other citizens, to a-sist in carrying out our city

cases that the hide shall accompany it. in order
