An old lady being sorely afflicted with a dis order usually denominated bystericks imagin ed she could not breathe, and appealed to her husband ou the occasion, with ‘Mr I catvt breathe.’ ‘Well, my dear,’ returned the! afflicted husband, I would not try, for nobody ‘ wains you should.’ From the Washington (Hobe. A wealthy inhabitant of the parish of East i ’ Feliciana has been arrested and committed for : trial on the charge of having set fire to the | Court House. He was first charged with tbe i crime by one of his own slaves whom he had whipped for refusing to commit the act, and ih<j charge was confirmed by five other ne- ; groes. The intention of the owner was tpfire : j the Clerk's office also, upon which the negroes j gave information. Such is their tale. Their ; ; testimony could not lie received against a white man but it led to auen investigation as lo induce the belief of his guilt, and the Judge ‘ committed him for trial. Mobile Journal unit Examiner. Bi mrn Auvc.— Among the many fulfil ac i cidenta which it occasionally becomes our un | plcsaut duty to record, is the following, which vve were n.formed of by an eye witness : On Friday, the Ist, insl. a man by the name of Scott, who had recently located himself on a farm iilkiui seven miles north of Piqua, on the Harlitn road, in atteniping to deepen his well, and mk llte wall, was buried by the Caving itt ; and falling of stones aud earth ail around hint In this situation he continued alive for some i time, before*any one would volunteer to de scend to his assistance. At length an Irish man, by the name of Tooly, came forward and offered his services. He was let down and had succeeded in releasing one of the unfortu nate man’s arms, and conversed with him, un til he was warned of itis danger by a large stone falling on him. Those above ltad barely time to raise the brave fellow to the surface, when about eight feet more of the wall and carlh fell iu and literally crushed and • poor Scott alive! Tin y eventually succeeded lit exhuming the body and committed it to the grave. We understand that a numerous fam ily depended upon him for support. I Shocking Accident. —We regret to learn, says the Newport, N. 11. Argus, that w hile the people of Morristown, Vt. were engaged in rearing anew meeting-house, alxiut n fortnight since, an accident occured of a very painful nature.—The frame had lieen rained to a con- j siilerable height, and planks laid across the j beams to afford a foothold to those assisting in constructing the roof, i.tc After a number of ‘men had ascended upon the planks, the sup port undernerth gave way, and twenty-nine persons wore percipitated to the ground, with the limber and planks of the frame! Twenty six of the number were badly injured, but strange to say, not a life was lost. Many had arms, legs, and ribs broken, and several litubs have been amputated. .I*l Old Convict and Hardened Case. — William Brown, sentenced in the Criminal Court on Saturday last, to three years impri sonment in the Eastern Penitentiary for the crime of larcency, was sixty-one years of age, thirty one rears of which time he had spent in prisons and penitentiaries in different parts of the Eniu-d Stales. He was confined at one time for 18 years in the-Massachusetts State Prison, and at another seven years in the old Wanut Street Prison in this city. Never did we w itness a more striking example of the damning effects of crime than in this abandon ed wretch, llts countenance was wild, care worn, haggard and desperate, aud hi* whole demeanor gave, alas ! sufficient, though lamen table evidence of his being ar*rk!C remorse less ana compfphr casehardened villain. His like vve never vv i'f* so lo**k upon again. Philadelphia Times. Tut: Hi nm:n Churches.—The New York Despatch says : —“ln taking a turn about the ruins oil Saturday, vve found workmen em ployed upon two of the churches injured by the conflagration which destroyed the Nation- I al Theatre. The repairs of the French Church” are in a staUuff great forwardness : and the workmen nP\ the Presbyterian Church in Franklin street, have made very good progress. The African Church is entirely down; the Theatre is untouched, und the walls vviil Aril of themselves one of these days, if not taken down, as they should be. The churches of the re-building of which nothing has been said are much nearer completion than the “Metrop olitiun Theatre” is near commencement.” Curious. —We learn from the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, that a young ) married woman in that city, who had been under medical treatment for several years for sciatica by some physicians, ami for I rheumatism by others, was on Monday Oc tober 38th, effectually cured by the removal of a whole needle an inch and a half in jength, whith was found deeply imbeded in the great gluteal muscle, It was not known how long the needle had been itt the body, but she remembers to have swal lowed one about ten years since, and has suffered actually injthat region for six vears. Groaning helps nobody; and impairs 1 the digestion.
