DR. PHELPS’ COMPOUND
T O MATO PILLS.
H A VING acquired an envied celebrity as an An
.ii Dyspeptic and Anti Billions remedy, and this
reputation being fully sustained by the high charac
ter of iu testimonials, and the constantly increasing
demand for tlie medicine, it is only necessary for the
proprietor to continue the caution to the public against
mistaking other preperations-which are introduced
as Tomato Medicines, for the true Tomato Pills.
As ungenerous and irividcous allusions to this med
icine have been published by f Tie proprietor of a very
preparation, called ‘Miles’ Extract of Toma
•to,’ evidently intended to impair the confidence so i
long reposed in Phelps’ Tomato Pills, it is proper
for the proprietor to request the public to investigate
I the source of these publications before they are indu-
I red to credit their truth and honesty.
An inquiry, for this purpose, made at Brunswick.
| Ohio, where the proprietor of‘Miles’ Extract’ resided
for a long time arid commenced his‘pill career,’ will
| be sufficient to render harmless these aspersive insin
j nations. Having no desire to injure ‘Miles’ Extract
1 would suggest no further inquiry, and am satisfied
to risk the Compound Tomato Pills upon tlicit* mer
its in competition to any preparation purporting to
be Tomato. While the effort to Wend, other Prepa
rations to the true Tomato Pills are continued, per
sons wishing the genuine medicine should be partic
’ ular to notice that th y bear the signature pf the pro
prietor, G. ft. PHELPS, M. D. but not an engrav

1. AND V MODE OF CURE -A will regli- I
j Ia led nnd proportionate quantity of bile upon the
stomach O always requisite for the promotion of
sound health—it stitHulutcs digestion, and keeps the
intestinal canal free from all obstructions. On the
interior surface of the liver is a peculiar bladder, iu
which the bile is first preserved, being formed by the
i liver (Yom the blood. Tlmnceit passes into the stom
ach and intestines, and regulates the indigestion.
Tims w e see w hen there is a deficiency of bile, the
body is constantly costive. On the other Imhd, an
overabundance of bile, causes frequent nausea in the ;
stomach ; and often promotes very severe attacks of!
disease, w hich sometimes end in (h ath.
Fever* always precede by symtoms of a disor* |
doted stomach ; as arc also scrofulous disord *rs,
and uli Nvnipntlietie.nl functional, organic qj febrile
diseases. From the same cause, the natural and
healthy action of the heart, and the whole vascular ,
, system is inquired and reduced below its natural stan
dard ; as exhibited m palpitations, languid pulse, j
torpor. of the limbs, syncope, and even death itself,
in consequence of an overabundance of a peculiar of
fensive substance to the digestive orgaii*.
The approach of bilious diseases is at all times ,
attended by decided symptoms of an existing disea
sed state oi’lho stomach and bowels; i. e. with those
signs which are Known to point out their contents
to be of a morbid irritating nature; hut whenever
the alimentary canal happens to he loaded w ith irri
tating matter, some derangement of the healthy ope
ration, either of the general system, or f some partic
ular organ of the body is the certain result: and
when this state happens to he united with any other |
symptoms of disease its ( fleets are always thereby j
much aggravated. The progress oforganic obstruc- j
lion is often so rapid as sc a rely to admit of lime for ‘’
the application ot such aid as is to be offered by art, !
yet, iu general, the premonitory symptoms of gastric,
load are perceptible for u day or two previous to the
feverish paroxism, a period, w henthemofct efficacious
assistance may be given, hy unloading the stomach
and alimentary canal of its irritating contents, and
thus reducing the susceptibility of disease.
MOFFAT'S LIFE MEDICINE’S, should always j
betaken in the early stages of billions complaints; I
and if persevered in strictly according to the direc- ‘
lions, will positively efleet a cure.
The mineral medicines often prescribed in thefsieais* j
eases, although they may effect a temporary cure, nl
the saine time create an unhealthy state of the blood,
and consequently tend to promote a return oft he very
disease which they arc employed to cure. It is then
by the use of purgatives, exclusively formed .of vege
table compounds, which, possessing within them
selves no deleterious agencies, which decomposition,
combination, or alteration can develdpe or bring into
action; and therefore, capable of producing no effect,
save that which is desired—that a safe remedy is
found.
The LIFE PILLS and PIIENIX BITTERS
have proved to be the most happy in their effects in |
eases of bilious diseases, of any purely vegetable J
preparation ever offered to thcpublic, Iflhc stomach ;
is foul, they cleanse it by exciting it to throw of its j
contents; ifnotjthey pass to the duodenum without j
exciting vomiting or nausea in the stomach; stimulat
ing the neighboring vieera, ns the liver and pane.ras,
so as to produce a more copious flow oft heir secret ions
into the intestines; stimulating the exhulent capillar
ies, terminating in the inner coat, which an increased

Fever ami Ape Positively
Cured.
] .lever :• lid Ague is nmoat obstinate disease,
. and in warm nijil humid climates, frequently re
sists every c* ’ bury mode of cure, so as to become
very distressing to the patient; and by the extreme
debility which the disease induces, it otten gives rise
to other chronic complaints. Marsh miasmata, or
(lie effitivia arising from stagnant water, is the most
frequent exciting cause of this disease; and one of
its great peculiarities is its susceptibility of a renew
al from very slight causes, such as from the preva
lence of an easterly wind —even without the repeti
tion of the original exciting cause. In this, Fever
und Ague differs IVnm most other fevers j nsk is-well
known, that after an ordinary fewer has once occur
red and been removed, the person affected is not so
liable to a fresh attack ns one who was not so uft'eet
ed. These circumstances render it extremely difficult
to effect a permanent cure of Fever and Ague, though
to relieve the patient for the time being is a very easy
task.
MOFFAT’S LIFE PILLS AND PHENIX
BITTERS have been thoroughly tested, and
proved to be a POSITIVE AND RADICAL Cure
of Fever and Ague. Hundreds of his fellow-citi
zens in the Wist, have voluntarily come forward to
assure Mr. MOFFAT that the LIFE MEDICINS
arc the only medicines that will THORUGHLY ef
fect a removal of this most tedious and disagreeable
disease.
Others who have emigrated to tbntricli and prom
ising portion ofour country—men who went out full
of hope, arid confident of winning a competence fi'Ofiif
the luxuriance of the soil; or who carried to the out
posts of our settlements the mercantile or ineclianicle
experience won in the crowded cities and towns of
the older states, have either returned with shattered
constitutions end depressed spirits, or they remain
in their new I dragging out u weary life j at
Inst to sink under some disease to wliieli they are
predisposed by that terror of the West, the FEVER
AN D AGUE Their hopes are blasted—their busi
ness energies destroyed—their El Dorado becomes a
desert, and tin-word of promise, made to the ear, is
broken to tnc lmpc.
To these Individuals, Me > MofTni would say—
‘'Try Hie LIFE MEDICINES, and you will yet an
ticipate your most sanguine expectations, for they
will certainly restore you to health.’*
FEVER AND AGUE is a complaint which re
quires to he menu its first approach, and combatted
at every stage. Deldoni fatal of hseK, u reduces the
strength, nnd impure* the functions ofthe organs, so
that upon the manifestation of disease Nature is un
; able, unassisted, lo resist the inroade. The Life
! Medicines, when taken strictly according to diree
; lions will cure it. and give to the weak and tremb
ling victim of disease, new IwHlth, life, and strength.
; For full particulars ofthe mode of treatment, the
; reader is referred to the Good Samaritan, a copy of
which accompanies the medicine. A copy may be,
