tionism have been declared no longer members
of that Body. This has not been effected by a
direct vole upon the question of slavery ; it was
brought about by a vote on doctrinal questions;
the effect however is certain, and we rejoice to
know that this ancient and respectable body of
Christians are casting out the “leaven of tin
riehteousness,” in this matter. As the mat
ter now stands, about 500 ministers, 1.000

declared to be no longer entitled to a voice in

FOR GOVERNOR.
We are requested to remark that th.: ap
proaching anniversary of our Independence
will be celebrated by the reading of the declar
ation of Independence by David VV. Lswis,
and the delivery of an oration by Albert Wil.

o’clock, A. M. at which the citizens are tn.

From England, we have Liverpool dates to
the 24th May, which represent no favorable
change in the monetary affairs of that country
since the previous advices. On the whole we
are disposed to think that from the general
tenor of the intelligence, things wore rather a
more gloomy aspect than at previous dates ;
vet our staple article had suffered little or no
change. Every avenue of trade, however,
seems to have been closed, and confidence en
tirely destroyed ; and we may confidently look
for more disastrous accounts before we can
reasonably anticipate a change for the better.

Two companies of Engineers under the di
rection of Col. Long set out from this place
on Thursday, to commence the surveys for
this Rond to enable the Engineer to determine
the most practicable rout for its location.
From what we have been enabled to learn from
gentlemen who conversed with Col. L. we
presume that the rout which will be found the
most practicable, will cross the Chattahoochee
as low' down as Gwinnett, and perhaps De
kalb county. No doubt seems to exist in the
ini.J of the Colonel, ofits entire prac icability
and of the immediate commencement of the
work at the earliest possible day after its loca
tion.
Gexi’l. Ilamit'oa’j Letter.
In our columns to-day will be found a por
tion of the letter of this distinguished Carolini
an* to Mr. N. Biddle, to which we invite the
particular attention of our readers. Opinions
from such a source, and on a subject of such
vital importance, are always worthy of the
calmest and most deliberate consideration, and
while we bag leave to differ with Geti’l. H.
iin many of his positions, we cannot deny to
theexercise on this occasion cf that disin
terested noble patriotism which has ever mark
ed his eventful brilliant career ; but we feel
assurred that he has erred ii many of his po
sitions, and under that impression we shall pre
sent in our next a review of ibis letter from a
distinguished Georgian well know:; to our read
ers ; to both of which the letter and review we
invite the scrutinizing investigation of our
readers. It is by such means alone, a calm
•dispassionate discussion of those important
questions, that it is possible for the common
people who are not versed in the laws of trade
and commerce, to arrive at a correct conclu
sion relative to the cause, the effect and the
remedy for our present monetary distress, such
a discussion we shall present i.. the articles to
v hich we allude.
Florida.
Such are the varied .accounts from this ill-fa
led Territory, with regard to the renewal of
hostilities, that we have felt ata loss what por
tion of tho intelligence to lay before our rea
ders. In our columns to-day will bo found
that which we have deemed most authentic,
s'.nd consequently most to be accredited.
We wculd remark, that however contradic- '
tory our intelligence may be, all the statements
concur in the admission of the departure of j
the Chiefs from the camp of Gen. Jessup. I

itself to our kindest feelings,) to our readers,we
feel it our duty to remark, in justice to the
proprietor who has launched his little bark in '
«o laudable a cause, “to bring out the talent of
the South,” that the Button thus fur is charac

The writer would invite the attention of the ’
citizens of Athens, to the advertisement of ;
Monsieur Bauge, of his Fencing Exhibition,
which comes off to-day at Mr. Goneke’s Con
cert Hall.
Throughout Europe this art has been car
ried to great perfection, and is now very pro
perly classed among the polite ticcomplish
inents of the age.
The peculiar and powerful influence which
fencing has upon the system, as well as the
protection which it affords against the assault
of an intriguing adversary render it equally
desirable and necessary. It invigorates the
arm, expands the chest, quickens the physical
powers, and gives a graceful and manly de- ,
portmeut to the pupil.
i I Ihe proficiency which Monsieur B. has at-
1 j taiued in this art. and his capacity for impart
ing readily instruction, render hrn entirely ca
, I pable of presenting an exhibition which wdi
be alike amusing and interesting, to all who

1 Official information has been comunicated by
Gen. Jessup, of the fact of the Indians having

; Micanopy, Jun.per and Cloud, were surrounded

against their will. The blame is laid upon the ■

T. L. SMITH.
We having witnessed the performance of Mr.
T. L. Smith’s new Brick Machine, invented by
Calvin Waterman, now in operation in this
place, take pleasure m r< commending it to the
public. The fact of its performance is its best
recommendation. We timed it, and find that with
stew moulds and inexperienced hands, it made
. an the rate of two thousand three hundred and
sixty-eight brick per hour. By moulding - ten
hours in the day, it would therefore turn out
twenty-three thousand six hundred per day
It lequircs six boys to bear off’, and four to sand
the moulds, Ac.—together with four grown
men. Thus fourteen hands are sufficient to
make the above named quantity of the most,
beautiful brick per day.

■ I have witnessed the performance of Mr. The-
I oderick L. Smith’s new Brick-making Machine,
just put into operation in this place ; and feel no
■ hesitation in pronoucing it a great and useful
1 improvement on any other method of brick mak
-1 ing I have ever seen, both as to the quality of
’ the brick and expedition in making. By request
■ I timed the machine for halfan hour; the result
of that trial shows that with 11 hands the ma
chine will turn out of beautiful and well tem
pered brick 2368 in an hour, or about 40 to the
minute.
