<3or. Crawford und Free ■nffraffe.
Il is not true, that George W. Crawford is op
posed to free suffrage.
Il is not true, that he was in the Legislature or
counselled the once so called Algerine law,
which required a property quaiiiicatiou for voters
in the city of Augusta.
Il is not true, that Mr. Crawford, evon signed
the petition in favor ol that law.
It is not true, that he approved of its provisions
in any shape or form, or that law wus a Whig
measure.
If is true, that such a law was passed by tho
Drxocbatic Legislature ot 1841.
It is true, that the Bill was proposed by the Sena-
tor from Richmond, at the request and under the
petition of a large unmber ot the citizens of Rich
mond county, ol both parties*
It is true, that at tho time of the passage of the
law it was approved by many prominent Demo
crats In Augusta, and that one of its most obnox
ious provisions, was inserted by a Democrat
who was last year a Candidate lor the Legislot
tore from Richmond county, and received tbe foil
Democratic vote.
It is true, that in 1842, Geo. W. Crawford was
called from hi* retirement to head the Whig tick
et, because of his supposed strength before the
people.
It is true, that this was predicated mainly on
the feet that he had mo comxrctiom whatever

The Washington correspondent of the New
York Journal of Commerce says, Mr. Shannon,
late miuisterto Mexico, has made & long com
munication to the Secretary of Stated in which he
fully details the result of his mission, the present
condition and policy ot Mexico, and the nature of
her relations with the United States. The writer
odds:
“ Mr. Shannon fully confirms the truth of what
had been strongly surmised before, that the Brit-
ish Government Jiad got some hold upon the Cal.
ifornias. She ims taken a mortgage upon them
to secure the payment to her subjects of debts to
•he amount of twenty-six miUions.ordoilara. Our
Government has, I learn, official knowlecger of
this transaction. That Great Britain will fore,
close tho mortgage, in due time, l have . not the
least doubt. The fine bays and harbor of that
region are of immense imjtortance to her,—vast
ly more so than the Oregon territory. In tho
event of war between the United States and Mex-
. hat the bill for its repeal was sus-
J by both Messrs. Miller and CrUWfbrd In
the Legislature of 1842, and that it passed mainf
ly through their influence. 1* .1
These statements are <41 susceptible of proof
either by the records or by numerous living wit-
nesses. They show the uUcr baselessness, of
the charge made against Governor Crawford by ’
Mr. McAllister’s friends. Those individuals
must oither hare been grossly misinformed as to
thcfects in tho case,' or they have wilfully and
maliciously preferred a charge against Governor
j|C. which they knew to be unsustained by even
the shadow ol* proof, merely for the purpose of
deceiving the pe pic. This same charge with
others equally untrue and impoien:, was urged
against Gov. C. in 1343. The people then
pronouncod upon its falsehood. Tho revival of
it now only proves the utter weakness ot his op
ponents 6c their inability to urge againrt him any
substantial argument. Had the friends of Mr.
McAllister any truthful allegations to present
against Gov. Crawford they would certainly not
be so impudent as to press those which are thus
susceptible of exp >sure. Their real < bject we
