PEACE f PEACE!! PEACE!!!
The rumor* of peace emanating from Washing*
ton, having all proved without foundation, they be*
gan to pour in from the other end of the lino, and
we are rejoiced to find that the arrival at New
Orleans of the steamer Aim Orleans, by which
the Delta of the 19th instant, received its Mex
ican correspondence, has confirmed the truth
of Rumor this time. The correspondence of
the Della going to prove the fact is voluminous,
and we cannot pretend to publish it this week—we
believe, however, there can be no doubt that Mr.
Trist and the Mexican Commissi*mere hale fixed
upon tome sort of treaty. It is said that Gen*.

MOBOCRACY.
We have received from a friend a communication
on this subject, suggested by an outrage recently
perpetrated in this place by some persons we know
not who, which resulted in the utter demolition of
a house belonging to an unprotected widow. While
we most cordially endorse the sentiments embodied
in the communication of our correspondent, we can
not, (for reasons which will at once suggest them
selves to him) give it a place in our paper. It is al
leged by those who favor mob violence that in all
cases like the one mentioned above, where it is
maintained the house in question was a public nui
sance—of the troth of which statement
justly due; it has been asked by his friends, bet
the claim has been unfeelingly and basely repudi
ated.

O’ Thq Philadelphia Bulletin refers to Gen. Tuy-
lor’s letter, recently publishetif'and speaks of it as
eminently characteristic. >lt Is so; it bears the im-
pres* of manlincsA ia every line. Th# Bulletin adds:
“ There is this about Gen. Taylor, which basal-
ways recommended him to.'bs, and which is. the
:ret of hi* popularity among the masse*: viz
is a man, and not a mere sham, to use Carlyle's
expression. lie is firm, yet respectful toothers;
exact in all his dealings, yet imposing on no man;
honest, sincere, and wise. It is the least of his mer
its, that he was the first to defeat the Mexicans, and
win that prestige for otir arm* which has since led
to snch astonishing results. Ilis'judicious conduct
under the many emltarrassing circumstances undei
which ho has been placed, hi* manly frankness, Ills
unassuming deportment, his capacity to rule him
self as well as others, place him foremost among
Americans, nay, among all men. It is rare, indeed,
in this or anv other country, to find one who is his
equal in moderation, honesty, and courage.
