ed their performances during the past year.

reference to the resolutions claiming - the whole of
Oregon" and the - immediate annexation of Texas,"

ance aad patriotism of the Senate we would have
been precipitated into a bloody war with England—
and under the latter, notwithstanding all the checks
of the Constitution, we have been by Executive
usurpation of authority not conferred by that in
strument, forced into a war with Mexico.

CO- We regret—deeply regret—that some of out
political brethren of this State have suffered tbeir
sympathies for Mr. Clay to be so tor aroused by the
grockodile lamentations of hypocritical Democratic
editors, as to suffer themselves to act in concert with
party and our principles
feeling a temporary division of the party ir
State at least. - Divide and conquer" is a maxim by
which thousands of political intriguers have gained
the ascendancy among the people. This is, and ha*
been the object of the Democratic editors through
out the country for some time past; and conse
quently they have industriously plied every art to
arouse the sympathies of the Whig party in favor
of our great Statesman, (whose memory will be
cherished by every true Whig while life lasts)
that they eve a button for him themselves, but
solely with the object of weakening Gen. Tatum,
whom they fear, together with aressota hope that
they may induce the

our object, as humble advocates of his claims to the
nomination, to maintain the unity of the party, and
this could not be done by refusing to act in concert
with the great body of oar political brethren of the
State, who bad publicly announced the will of the
people on the subject. So, now, if the party should
suffer by this unfortunate difference in our ranks,
we wash our hands of the offence—upon the heads
of thoee who profess to be Mr. Clat*s exclusive

summarily cutting off Gen. Tatlou from part i
in the Convention! How be arrives at this
elusion, we know not. If be is an ofaerver of the
signs of the times, he most know tkat Gea. Tatlob,
amcmg the peoylCi has more friends than either of
the others; and if the will of the people is not
fleeted by the Conrentioo, the thing becomes an ab
surd and ridiculous farce, which will excite the
contempt of nil hottest men.

But little comment is necessary ujron a plain, un
varnished certificate like the following. Coining as
it does from one of the most respectable aud worthy
citizen of Poughkeepsie, X. Y.,it must cany convic
tion with it, more especially, wlien we coti.-ider the
time that has clapped without a return of tho un
pleasant symptoms—many of the certificates of the
day being obtained after a lew days* trial,when a mo
mentary (or perhaps imagin try) relief has been ob
tained, without any peru&ncnt benefit. (This cer

may ultimately he a resignation of Mr. Buchanan,

the Constitution for light to direct him in adminis
tering the Government, a poor recommendation !—
This is nothing more than we expected—belonging
as he does to a party who have long since “pro
gressed" so far beyond the metes and bounds there
laid down os almost entirely to have lost sight of
that glorious charter of our liberties.
