The Weitcro hunler (though rarely) has been set upon by robbers, for the pack of furs he was carrying upon his back to some of the seaport towns to dis pose of; but as the fur hunters are gen erally on foot, and from habits of watch ing about lor cither hostile Indians or ■wild animals, arc always on their guard, and as the robbers well know that they are, to a man, riflemen who seldom miss tbeir mark, they avoid them. During my rambles in the wilds and fastnesses ol'Cnlilornia, I became acquainted with many of them, some from the back set tlements of the United Slates, others from Canada. I have hunted for months with them, and witnessed some conflicts between them and wild animals, in which the utmost daring and recklessness were ex hibited by the hunter. These arc not the men that robbers like to encounter, but I have said they sometimes take u liking to the valuable packs of furs, which, if they find any facility for ob taining, they may make the attempt up on.
