The Mechanic.
The editor of the Portland Transcript
says, that certain editors, with owl-like
gravity, address themselves to the me
chanic, telling him if he is industrious
he will get wealth—if studious he will
get knowledge—if virtuous he will gel a
good name, and into good society &c.,
&c M and then Batter themselves tbat.tbey
have won tlie favorable opinion of those
whose sides they have in this manner
tried to tickle."
The men who thus address the me
chanics of the United Slates insult them,
and betray their own vulgarity-~ihey
do not know the men they seek to in
struct, and this is unpardonable iu those
who assume the right to counsel them.
If the disscminaicrs of this twaddle were
placed in a position to be contrasted
with the mass of mechanics, they would
discover their own deficiencies, and ever
after confine their silly counsel to minds
of their own class.
This offensive kind of advice is con
tinually travelling the round of certain
papers, and is sure to be copied, and
sent to-their numerous readers by mam
moth literary sheets. Were it con
fined to this latter class of papers it
might pass without rebuke, for twaddle
legitimately belongs to them; but some
papers that have character for intelli
gence and ability also copy tbe offen
sive staff. Let us disb up a dose of it for
(bore of some other occupfiaon than a
mechanical one. We have a morceau
'before us, adderssed to mechanics,
which we have traced through about
thirty exchanges, and tbe substance of
it would sound about thus—addressed
■to lawyers:
••Tbe lawyer is tbe noblest work of

the law is gone forth: we must constant

We would wish to pause*; on, on!—
