• Westers Steamers Lost.—The Pittsburgh
Journal gives an account of 55 steamboats lest du
ring tbe past year, on the Western rivers alone.
Frightful OccurrenceL—A most frightful oc
currence happened on the 9th inst. on the Schuyl
kill river, near Fairmont. A large piece ot ice,
with 100 persons upon it, floated off into the cur
rent. Great consternation prevailed. Numbers ,
were rescued by a boat, others jumped into the wa
ter Three persons were carried over the dam—a
man. a boy, and a little girl. The latter was tbe
daughter of Morgan Asti. She struck her forehead
against a cake oficc, which cut a dreadful wound.
All were finally rescued, and no lives lost.
