Mexico. No system of slavery can be more harsh j
and degrading, tor it carries with it none of those
kindly sympathies »«d early associations which so '
olten alleviate it in the United States. Penns are
persona sold fur debt, and it rarely happens that
one »s ever redeemed from bondage till old age ren- j
ders him useless to his owner, who then charita
bly permits him to beg for the remnant of his life.
The only appearance of liberty which he enjoys, is
that of selecting a master who may choose to buy
him from his owner by paying the claim against
^fih, which, when tendered, (with the consent of
the alave.) he is compelled by law to accept as a
