LINES.
Ob! say where can the wretched find,
The balm to lull to rest
The hideous visions of a mind,
That peace has never blest.
C*an it be found among the great,
Mid fashions’ giddy day ?
No—for a time they can elate,
But soon they pass away.
Yes! soon tlicy pass, when death doth lower,
Wealth cannot say, still iive ;
And wealth, ’tis known, has not the power
Man’s happiness to give.
Can change of place drive off tlic spell,
Or free the mind from care ;
Ah, no! fate like a demon fell,
Still hurries to despair.
Oh! Happiness, ’tis but a name,
A feeling ne’er possest;
I'fe sought it long, but yet the same
Dark sorrow s till my heart.
Then say, where can the wretched find
The balm to lull to rest,
The horrid visions of a uiind,
That joy has never blest.
OCEAN BARD.
HYMN,
FOR THE FT MALE FRIENDLY SOCIF.TY.
- Oh ! bright and blessed be the bands
That link in love our sister hands ;
True servants we of Him in I lea' n
To mark the “New Commandmentgiv’n.”
Re’t ours the Olivc-branrh to strow,
And quell the tears of w ant and woe,
Affliction’s brow with aim to twine,
And round the cottage coil the vine.
Our feet shall smooth the slope of age,
Our bands the pangs of pain assuage,
And ev’u this life shall bloom with hours
Os blessed fruits, and balmy flow’rs.
So angel sisters from above
•Shall hail us to their home of Love,
When Death our fading band untwines,
And Heav’u’s eternal Sabbath shines.
ON HUMAN HAPPINESS.
O citrus hoininum! O quantum cst in rebus
insane!— Ptrs. Sat. i. 1.
Alas ! how little man can guess,
What likeliest speaks his happiness,
now oPt we find a present care
The way to future joy prepare ;
How nft’nrr still that bliss to-day,
Paves but to woe. to-inorrow’s way.
So on the stone the trav’ller sheds
His curse, on which he stumbling treads !
That stone, which breaking, he descries
A diamond of unusual size ;
Or hails with joy the vap'rous light,
That leads him only to eternal night.
TO MY'MOTHER.
Oh ! thou upon w hose bosom dear
My infant head reposed;
Oh, thou whose lips, with kiss sincere,
My weary eye-lids clos’d ;
Though many risen suns have set
Since lust 1 mi t thy view,
Oh, never can my heart forget
What to thy lore is due.
Think not, my mother, 1 can cease,
To love my hoinp and thee ;
Think not my hours are hours of peace,
Like those of infancy;
Alas! those cloudless days are gone,
Those halcyon hours are tied;
.And on the world’s cold heart alone
I pillow now my head.
I pity you, ye stars so bright,
That shine so sweetly all the night,
Beaming ever coldy down
On rock and river, tower und tow n,
Shining so lonely.

NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW.
THIS Work has now arrived at the twen
ty-second volume, and receives a wide
and increasing patronage throughout the L.
States. In its leading objects und character
it has a double purpose: First, that of con
taining criticisms on works oftasb, literatim,
and what may be called the more elegant
blanches of learning: And, secondly, that
of being a depository of discussions on top
ics of general politics, legislation, science,
our internal relations, social institutions, and
in short, whatever comes down to the imme
diate interests of the community. It is a
special design, as far as possible, to give the
work a strictly national and American char
acter.
Several of the constant contributors are
men of letters, who have travelled and studied
in foreign parts, and become familiar with the
languages, and literature of the old countries;
others are devoted to literary and scientific
pursuits as a profession; w hile others are
conspicuous among the legislators of the
country, at the bar, or in our highest courts
of justice. Owing to the steady support of a
large, number of gentlemen thus qualfied, who
reside in different p. rts of the Union, the
work has met w ith a degree of favor and suc
cess, both in the United States and abroad,
which no similar publication in this country
as enjoyed ; nor has its prosperity at any
former period been so rapidly increasing as at
present.
The North American Review is published
in Boston, qu irterly, making two volumes a
i ear, of about 450 pages each.
The So scription price is five dollars a
year, to be paid by new Subscribers in ad
vance, and afterwards in April, when the
second number for the year shall be received.
A subscriber may begin with any volume;
and, as new editions of the back numbers are
constantly re-printing, full sets of the work,
or single numbers, can at any time be sup
plied.
Tire numbers as they appear, will be sent
by mail to any part of the U. Stapes, if de
