From the National Republican.
Priestcraft, Royalty, and Blasphe
my combined. — We hardly know
whether we shall be excused for in
serting the following extract from a
London paper of a letter from Spain,
giving an account of the most dar
ing and outrageous act of blasphe
mous villainy ever beard of, com
mitted by an impudent Franciscan,
clothed in sacred robes. The blas
phemous presumption it exhibits,
chills the blood at the bare recital,
and fills the mind with unutterable
horror, of the wretch who planned
and executed such an infamous
scheme, to practice upon the super
stitious bigotry and ignorance of
men who arc slaves to the ironheart
cd despotism of a weak, pusillani
mous, and cruel monarch, drunk
with power and dead to all senti
ments of liberality and justice, slaves
also to the most impious deceptions
of abandoned priests, practiced in
the name of the Almighty, in order
to uphold the blood-stained throne of
the tyrant!
We must feel for the wretched
condition of a people thus goaded
by unrelenting despotism, and cheat
ed and deceived continually by the
abominations of a corrupt priest
hood, who plunder from them in the
name of religion whatsoever they co
vet! And who will not breathe the
fervent aspirations to that Jlmighty
Being who is thus impiously insulted,
that he will hasten the time of their
dclivcrcnce, and send among them
the pure light of religion and liber
fy?
His Holiness the Pope has lately
pronounced the beatification of a
Spanish Franciscan, named Jubeiu.
Amongst the numberless miracles at
tributed to this holy monk, is one of
having resuscitated several couple
of half-roasted fowls, which at bis
command, took wing from the spit,
and flew away with most miraculous
velocity. The age of miracles may
be over in other countries, but not
in Spain, for it was no longer ago
than last year, that the following ve
ry remarkable one took place, and
which is firmly believed by all 'white
(blaucos} Spaniards. During the
great drought of last summer,
prayers wore offered up in all the
Churches for rain, and amongst oth
ers in that of the village of Las Ca
bezas d’ San Juan, in Andalusia,
where, the unfortunate Riego pro
claimed the constitution. But it was
in vain that the patron Saint Nicho
las was worried with prayers—be
was, it seems, not a wet saint, for
not a drop of rain fell. However,
on a Sunday, as the faithful were at
their devotions in his church, they
prcceived a letter in the hand of the
saint. Some of the most devout ap
proached to take it; but though
Saint d’ las Cabeaz de San Juan is
of no more yielding material than
wood, yet he raised the had in which
he held the letter, which was taken
as an unequivocal sign that he was
unwilling to deliver it. The cure,
• being informed of the circumstances
came in full canonicals to the saint
and prayed him humbly to give him
the letter, which the saint by lower
ing his hand, acceded to, and the
cure took the mission and read it t<
the congregation, to their infinite
edification. It was couched in the
following terms:
‘Abodes of the Blessed, Alay 1, 1824.
‘My beloved Nicholas, — 1 have
heard your continual prayers to m>
to send down rain upon your coun
try; you have, no doubt, forgotten
the crimes that your rebel village i
stained with, and which are tin
cause of the drought which now af
flicts unfortunate Spain. It is in
vain that you ask for water —at pre
sent it is impossible for me to oblige
you. Except rain, ask any thing
else you wish from.
Your ever affectionate.
(Signed)
THE ETERNAL FATHER’
This miracle was of public notori
ety, and made a considerable noise,
not only in Andalusia, but all over
Spain. Even at present, should any
one be imprudent enough to ex
press any doubt of it before the
brave inhabitants of Las Cabezas d'
San Juan, he would incur considera
ble risk of broken bones, if not loss
of life.

GEORGIA STATESMAN, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1827.
THE
CASKET,
OR FLOWERS OF
LITERATURE, WIT
SENTIMENT.
FOR 1827.
Office or the Saturday Ev. post.
Philadelphia, Dec. 2. 1826.
THE CASKET, or Flowers of Literature,
Wit and Sentiment, which has had an unpre
cedented increase of patrons during the last
six months, will after the present volume is
finished, contain, each number, 40 octavo
pages, printed well, on small handsome type,
upon the finest paper, stitched and covered,
and furnished at the low price of Two Dollars
and fifty cents per annum. The Casket is a
collection from the choicest pieces of the Sat
urday Evening Post, made with a reffcrence
to the difference which should exist in the
materials of a weekly paper, and those of a
monthly publication, the former of course en
riched with essays, poetry, anecdotes, and
those set off by a recital of the occurrences of
the week. The latter can receive little value
from a mere detail of events, many of which
would cease to be interesting before they
were recorded.
The vast quantify of matter crowded, by
small type and careful arrangement, into the
columns of every number of the Saturday-
Evening Post, will in the course of a month,
furnish the most ample materials from which
to form an interesting periodical work such
as the Casket has been considered by its
partial friends, and such as we intend it shall
be. Notwithstanding the fact, that tire Cas
ket is but a collection from the columns of
the Saturday Evening Post, we confidently
predict, and indeed we are sanctioned in the
experience we already have, that its mopt
numerous patrons will be found among the
subscribers to our weekly paper.—A large
number of those who take the “Post” de
pend upon that paper for the news of the
week —it is therefore read with avidity by
almost every member of the family where it
is received, and this general use frequently
injures ijs appearance so much as almost to
render it unfit for the file, or for binding.
The numbers too, by this general use, are not
unfrequently lost, mutilated, or entirely des
troyed, and the file thus broken. —The Casket
is calculated to prevent this inconvenience,
and to furnish, at a very cheap price, all the
useful matter, for which the weekly paper
would be desirable when bound.—ln thus
giving a permanent form and select associa
tion to the choice pieces of cur weekly con-j
tributors, it is confidently anticipated that
new and successful inducements will be held
out for the exercise of superior talent, and
unusual care in our literary department.—ln
addition to the recommendation of neatness
in the general appearance—and particular
attention to the typographical execution, it is
our intention to embellish each number of the
“Casket” with three handsome Engravings
from the hands of some of the most distin
guished artists of the country.
With these claims tospatronagc, the “ Cas
ket” will, as has been previously mentioned,
be afforded to those who subscribe for that
paper exclusively, at the low price of $2,50
per year, a subscription which it is confident
ly believed, is much lower than that for any
other publication of a similar character in
this country —but to the subscribers of the
“Saturday Evening Post” the “Casket”
will be furnished for $2,00.
The January No. for 1827, will be em
bellished with a portrait of the late venerable
JOHN ADAMS, formerly President of the
United States, one of Longacre’s best engrav
ings ; also a correct and beautiful view of
FAIR MOUNT WATER WORKS, in the
vicinity of Philadelphia ; besides the first No.
of the SCHOOL OF FLORA, being the
commencement of a regular series of Treat ies
on Botany, illustrated with numerous cuts.
Post-Masters and publishers of papers who
i will interest themselves in obtaining subscri
bers, and be responsible for the subscription,
shall be entitled to every sixth copy gratis.
Address
ATKINSON & ALEXANDER,
Philadelphia.
zUZP’Subscriptions ft»r the above work will
be received at the Office of the Georgia States
man. Persons wishing to subscribe, would
do well to send in their names as early as
possible, as, there is no doubt the demand for
the work will be greatly increased, and there
fore the possibility of being furnished w ith the
Nos. from the beginning, will be rendered
more doubtful.
