TARPLEY, c. c. o. 65—6 t Bald Eagle. —‘This distmguisned bird, as he is the most beautiful of bis tribe in this part of the world, and the adopted emblem of our coun try, is entitled to particular notice. H has been long known to natural ists, being common to both conti nents, and occasionally met with from a very high northern latitude, to the borders of the torrid *one, but chief ly iu the vicinity of the sea, and along the shores and cliffs of our lakes and large rivers. Formed by nature for braving the severest! cold; feeding equally upo: /the produce of the sea. and of the land; possessing powers of flight capable of outstrip ping uvon the tempest themselves; un.iwad by my thing but man; and from the ethereal heights to which be soars, looking abroad, at oue glance, on an immeasurable expans* of forests, fields, lakes, and ocean, deep below him; he appears indif ferent to the little localities of change of season*; as in a lew min utes be can pass from summer to winter, from the lower to the higher regions ofthe atmosphere, the abode of eternal cold; and tin nee descend at will to the torrid or the arctic re gions ol the earth He is therefore found at ail seasons in the countries which he inhabits; but prefers such places as huv« been mentioned a hove, from the great partiuiiry he has ibr fish ‘ln procuring these he displays, in n very singular manner, the geni us and energy ol his character, which is tierce, contemplative, daring, and tyrannical; attributes not exerted but on particular ocasions; but when put forth, overwhelming /II opposi tion. Elevated upon a high dead limb of some gigantic tr e, that commands a wide view of the neigh bouring shore and ocean, he seems calmly to contemplate the motions of the various feathered tribes that pursuo their busy avocations below; the snow white gulls slowly winnow ing ibe air; the busy triugae cours ing aiong the sands; trains of ducks streaming over the surface; silent and w atchful cranes, latent and wad ing, clamorous crows, and all tb«t winged multitudes that subsist byf the bounty of this vast liquid maga-. zinc of nature. High over all theseit hovers oDe, whose action instantly! arrests his attention. By his widjf curvature of wing, and sudden s*/$- peutieu in air, he knows him to f>« the fish hawk settling over some «ta>‘ voted victim ofthe deep. Ilia, eye kindles at the sight, and balancing himself, with half opened wind’s, oa the branch he watches the Down, rapid as an arrow liruyi heath en, descends the distant Object of his attention, the rear of its wiQge reaching the ear as it in the deep, making the t>urges loam around. At this men:,put the looks ofthe Eagle are all arAlor; aud level ling bis neck for flight, he seen the Fish Hawk emerge,/struggling with his prey, and inte the ait wah screams of fixiiKiiuen, Tins* are the signal fur ~ur hero, wiie ( ■auaching iatq the e.f, instantly give
