Nevertheless, he has of- : ten to report‘fatal accidents,’ where j men are crushed under the wheels of j the car, and killed or injured in any! other way. Having had a very long ex- j perience as a manager of zemindaries (estates) in Lower IJengal, a position' which brought me into most intimate | counoction with the people, I have no hesitation in saying that the acci dent reported m the Times of the 13th of August, as having occurred at Ser- ampore was a case of self-immolation, j A case that occured in my own expe-j rience will illustrate the grounds of j my belief. 6ome twenty-five years! ago I was managing a large estate in Lower Bengal, belonging tu a Hindoo gentleman. In the chief’ village of this estate there was a Ruth, or Jug gernaut car which having become di-| lapidated, underwent rather extensive] repairs. These cars are supported on [ a number of wheels which'are invisi ble externally. On the day when the Ruth ought to have proceeded on its journey'the huge mlutitude found it impossible to move it. As I afterwards learned, the priests had locked the wheels. For two or three days the people tried to move it, but in vain. At last it began to be whispered that a human sacrilice was required to in augurate the newly repaired car. A day or two more, aud I was told that the victim had been procured in the person of a leper who had sold himself tor the sum of k£0. 1 was also told that the Barogah, or Superintendent of Police, ha'i been handsomely brib ed, and that he would report to the ! magistrate ‘Accidental death.’ I did J not believe all this especially as my j informant was a woman who, I ] thought, might* have been imposed upon by what we call ‘bazaar gup,’ or common gossip; but in two or three days more I was informed that to the joy of the whole country round about, the Ruth had at last moved, but that, unfortunately, a poor leper falling under the wheels, had been crushed to death. It was, however, a purely accidental occurrence, for, alter a most searching inquiry, the Darogah had so reported. Alter this experience I made a practice of watching the Ruths, of which there are a great ma ny in Bengal, and invariably found when one refused to be drugged by the people, as the ‘smallar car’ ol your correspondent did, its first motion was attended with a seri"us if not fa tal acccident. Your correspondent thinks the fact that the mail whose thigh was crushed drank gin proves •that be could not be a fit subject for a Hindoo sacrifice., It appears he does not know that all those who swing at the Churruck Poojah are persons of the lowest caste, or rather, hoc ste at all, who are paid by weal thy Hindoos to do this penance in their stead. The fact of the nan’s being an outcast is very strong proof that lie was a purchased victim, aud this is still further confirmed by the native-like attempt to divert the sus picions of the saliebs by the loudly- expressed blame ot the god for punish ing him. Another suspicious circum stance is that the police had got them selves and the station magistrates away from the ‘smaller car,’ so that there might be no interruption to what was about to happen.” A query for mothers—Why is a screaming baby like the goddess of of morning? Because it’s roarer (Aurora.) “Bobby, why don’t your mothpr sew up your trousers"? “Cause she’s at the vestry meeting for the hea thens.” A worthy man, unaccustomed to public speaking, being suddenly call ed upon to address a Sunday school, rose to his feet, and after struggling for utterance, at last hoarsely mutter ed : “Dear children, don’t never play with powder.” A LL person* are hereby notifi-il not to employ Natnan Btarue*, Junior, (i-olorni) as he is under contract with me for the present year. Seven years ago we adopted the plan of sending our “Farmer,” Cooking Stoves through the country with wagons, by our traveling salesman in order to supply a want long felt in the South, and that each family might have an opportunity of seeing if not purchasing one of these indispensable household articles The abundant success of our enterprise throughout the States of Missouri. Kentucky, Ten nessee and Georgia, and the universal lavor with which our Stoves are received everywhere, convin ces us that in order to supply the continued growing demand, we must largely increase our forces at ihe Foundry ; hence we have increased onr daily manufacture of this one pattern to thirty, and will still further increase it to fifty if our trade continues to demand it: so you may at all times rely upon being supplied. Our salesmen, who will visit you, are authorized to gwe same terms as though you made the purchase direct from ourselves at the Foundry. We have but one price, and from that we never d- vinte. Cooking Stoves from the important relations they bear to the every day requirement*, and upon which in so greatra degree depends the convenience, comfort and happiness of every family, may he truly consider d the most wonderlul of all incehaoical constructions for domestic use No worthier object has ever engaged the attention and genius ot man. and in no department of invention have more rapid advances been made than in the improvement of this indispensable household article As we trace ti eir history from the tiast rude construction, we see them gradua ly assuming forms of beauty. correct principles being developed and applied until in the perfectness of the structure to which your attention is invited, there seems little room for improvement To those persons in the Stove trade who thins their business will be ruined by us an t who therefore oppose and misrepresent us and our goods at all pDces, we desire to assure them that instead of being an injury to them, we are doing them a benefit, bv building up a business which has heretofore been neglected, and by in troducing an article of household utility, must ultimately bring them iuto general use ia every family. BULL’S Read the following extract of a letter from Mrs. Rivers, wile of Rt-vereud Dr. Rivers, one of the most learned, eloquent and popular Miuicters of the Method ist Episcopal Church, and who is ai present stationed at Broadway Church, Louisville, Ky. Louisville, Kr., Oct. 8, 186‘J. Dr. John Bull—Dear Sir : Many thanks to you for the medicine you have so kindly giveu me. I have beeu a great sufferer tor years, an i had ihe advice ot" various physicians. Some pronounced my spine, sopua uiy lungs, and some my heart to be the seat of my dis ease. I have been burnt, blistered and cupped until I had become disheartened. Several very eminent physicians who examined my spine informed me that I was threatened with paralysis or appoplexy any day aud that nothing but a setou would relieve ine. I had a perfect horroroi that, aud was hesitating about having one inserted, when you kindly sent me your .Sarsaparilla which I immediately beguu to take three times a day. I hud suffered terribly with a must acute piin in the right side of my head, especially when I would rend or write for any length of time, aud on rising to my feel I would be perfectly blind tor several minutes, aud would nave to hold to something to prevent falling. I am most happy to inform you that the pain in my head is entirely relieved ; I suffer but seldom with iny spine and then not so acutely- My appetite is good ; indeed for the first time iu my life I enjoy my dinuer more than any meal during the day. You kindly sent me four bottles again last night, and i began again this morning, and I hope to be en tirely relieved. Please accept my heartfelt thanks and best wishes. Very truly your most grateful friend, M. B. C. Rivirs. My journal abound* with similar letters, ail of winch I guarantee to be genuine and wntteu by tbe persons whose names they bear. Do not suffer yourself to be imposed on. Don't be drawn away after new and doubtful experiments. Don’t risk your health by letting novices experiment upon you with their trash. .Vly Sarsaparilla lias stood itie teat tor t« euty fiveyears , it is still the .Sarsaparilla of the day, and of the age, towering over all ot hers iu popularity and its cuia'ive qualities. Avoid all those who are trying to palm off ou you other extracts of Sarsaparilla, so-called. Remember it is Dr- John Bull’s Sarsaparilla, of Louisville, Ky , that is the old aud reliable remedy lor impurities of the blood aud scrofulous affections. Always bear that in mind.
