fit’ The Convention to select a democratic candi-
dati for Congress will meet in this city on Thursday
next, tilth inst,
nomination of Capt. Williamson.
A meeting was held at the Court
House in tins city on Wednesday last
to nominate u democratic candidate
to represent Baldwin county in the
next General Assembly. Toe meeting
was a very large one, and the names
of several worthy gentlemen were
urged by their iriends lor the nomin
ation. A resolution was adopted by
the meeting that after the first ballot
the names of the two highest only
should be voted for. Capt. W. W.
Williamson and Mr. Thos. Latimer
received the highest vote on the first
ballot; and on the second ballot Capt.
Williamson received 1‘JO votes and
3dr. Latimer 1 d-3.
Capt Williamson is, therefore, our
standard-bearer for the good old coun
ty of Baldwin ; and without dispar
agement to any of. the other gentle
men voted for (any one of whom,
being nominated, would have received
our hearty support,) we can truly say
that none more able or more worthy
could have been selected. Capt. Wil
liamson was a gallant soldier, is an
able and promising young lawyer and
a Christian gentleman. If elected he
will do honor to our county, and Mil-
ledgeville will have a champion whose
power will be felt : and that lie will
be elected there can be no doubt, for
who that feels any interest in our
town and county (white or black) will
reluse to vote for him V There is
among the colored people a strong de
sire lor the restoration of the Capital
to Milledgeville and many of the more
sensible among them will vote for the
man who is most able to serve our com
mon interest in a local point of view.
Besides Capt. W 7 . is honest and capa
ble and will do justice to all men—
many colored men ki ow this and will
vote lor him. He will receive the
enthusiastic support of his own party.
We are pleased to learn that Messrs.
Latimer, Webb and Briscoe, (his op
ponents in tlie nomination) will give
him their warm, earnest, woiking sup
port. We expected nothing less from
gentlemen of their well-known pa
triotism, but we mention it as an ex
ample worthy ot imitation in other
counties and never to be forgotten in
our own.
We confidently predict for Captain
Williamson a triumphant election on

Democratic Meeting in Baldwin
County.
Milledgeville, Sept. 11, 1872.
The convention was called to order at 12 M. by the
President, Col Grieve, who proceeded to address the
body in explanation of the object of the meeting.—
After remarks by diff rent speakers. Mr. L Carring
ton irtroduced the following resolution which was
IC solved. That in order to promote the interests
of the Democratic party of Baldwin county, this meet
ing proceed to ballot for a candidate for present a
live in the next State legislature, and said ballot to
tie closed at 3 o’clock, P. M. this day The person
receiving the majorby of the whole number of votes
pi lied shall be declared the nominee*
Resolved further. That in the event there shall be
no nomination or. 'he first ballot, that all the candi
dates except the two highest withdraw, leaving the
is-oe upon the second ballot between these candidate*
receiving the greatest number of votes ou the first
ballot.
Captain Crawford introduced a resolution regulat
ing tin* inauner of the balloting providing for three
managers <>f the same ; one to receive voles, and two
to register the names <-f voters; said names to be pre-
serr d by the Secretary for future reference, which
was adopted.
The convention then went into the nomination, with
no result upon the fir>t ballot.
Upon the second ballot Capt. W. W. Williamson re
reiving the highest number of votes was declared the
nominee of t he part v.
The interest exhibited by the inhabitants of tlie
county in tire meeting was very gratifying, as an au
gury of better times to coine.
M. GRIEVE, President.
P. C. Furman, Soc’y*
We learn that the Radicals (colored, of course,
as there are no white Radicals iu this county, so far
as we know,) held a meeting on Saturday night la»t
for the purpose of nominating a candidate for Repre
sentative. They could not agree and adjourned with
out umkiug a nomination.

Th" Largest Stock of Dry Goods
Ever Drought to this -ETarket.
Our very clever and very enterpris
ing friend, Mr. Adolph Joseph, the
prince of dry goods merchants, who
never does anything by halves, has
brought to tins market one of the
largest and best assorted stocks of dry
goods ever offered for sale in this vi-
c
cinity. Li is piles of new goods are
positively alarming to small dealers.
But he knows that at the prices he is
offering them he is bound to secure
customers from far and near. We ad
vise everybody to go to Joseph’s and
see (or themselves. He is determined
to sell and defies competition. His
polite and attentive salesmen Messrs.
]\lapp, Goodman and Jarratt, will take
pleasure in showing goods, and the
people of the surrounding country are
invited to come and look at his stock.
As an evidence of Mr. Joseph’s de
termination to sell we call attention to
his advertisement in this paper.

personal supervision, at his work* in Louisiana, wi-o
never allows one to be seat frem his works until it
lias been fully tested, and made to gin perfectly in
every respect. This mode of testing is very impor

imperfect.
The IMPROVED GIN differs ma f erially from the
Sti el Bru.-h (iin foimerly sold by us, in as much as the

but one.
We guarantee every Gin to be of very light draft,
to thoroughly clean the seed, and make a superior sam

adjusted and gins very fast.
We respectfully refer to all those who have used the
