A TIME OF SUSPENSE AND ANXIETY.
When the ceiling fell in, accompanied by an exp!
sion, in the store of G. W. Haas, seve; al persons were
known to be inside. One, then another came rushing
out, aud a little later a third (Mr. Lyman Compton.) fin-
in his hair aud on his clothing, his face blackened t i
the cinders and smoke. Fortunately lie was i ot mu,
hurt. This.was in the front; others escaped by the
rear, among tnein Mr. M Joel, who was badly burned
and hurt by the falling timbers. Mr. Haas (md otic
narrowly escaped death. At least one man was seen
to struggle in the flames and fall; but who was hi '
no one could tell! And now a feeling of horrible sus
pense and anxiety spread rapidly over the town—and
enquiries for loved ones were made everywhere. Ii
was rumored that this one, that one and another were
burned to death—that three or more person- had per
ished in the flames.
MR. JAMES COVEY. "
After several hours it was satisfactor y ascertained
that only one man had perished, viz: Mr. James Co
vey. His heart and a few of his bones (the balance of
his body being consumed to ashes) were taken from
the ruins. He was a bcd of Mi Joshua Covey, was
about 21 years of age and was engaged in merehau
diziug in another portion of the city. He was helping
Mr. Haas save his goods, and had just returned from
the Presbyterian Church, where he assisted in quelling
the flames.
The following has been suggested to us :

the cool and excellent judgment ar.d energy displayed
by him aud hie able assistants I he colored people

Dr. dnrnd’e filniveranl Plow.
On Thursday last we saw the strength of this plow
tested, by Mr. James Sherlock, agent. He had two
of Cal. Johnson s large, strong males (18 hands high)
hitched to the plow, and three men pressed it into the
ground. A furrow ten inches deep and eight inches
wide was ploughed, and the ground (back of the store
of Mr. Gause) was almost as hard as a brick. This
patent plough stock weighs only eighteen pounds and
its great strength is proven by the above test. For
lightness, strength, durability and cheapness it cm un >t
be excelled. Tue stock is so made tiiat any kind of
a plowshare can be attached, iu a moment, without
tbe moving of a tap.
We are pleased to learn that fhi3 plow is meeting
