f From the St. Lorfl# Republican.]
DeBar’s opera bouee was last eve
ning the scene of a tumult . which had
some serious a* wfcH ^ amusing fea
tures. The house was filled to witness
Mr. Chanfrau’s “Kit” and was espe
cially crowded in the family tjirole and
gallery. The play was progressing fine
ly, and in one of the most exciting
scenes, when all were deeply interested,
a loud crash occurred in the gallery.
The boy§ in the upper regions made
a rush, and commenced yelling. This
started all the rest of the house, and
a scene of the wildest confusion ensued.
There was a general impression of dan
ger, and some supposed the house
was tumbling into a heap oftnins. A
panic was inevitable.
Some of the cooler heads who were
in a position to survey the scene, en
deavored to reassure the terrified peo
ple who were rtishifcg pellmell toward
the doors, but with little avail. Of
course the play stopped* wd the play
ers were dumbfounded. Nobody ap
peared to know anything about what
was the matter and things were reaely
growing serious. Only those who
have seen similar occurrences can form
any idea of wbat a frightful thing a
large and panic stricken audience is.
Of course, some ladies faint, that is a
natural consequence. It is enough to
make them faint to witness how some
of their brave protectors behave them
selves when they catch the infection 0/
a panic.
One terrified gentleman, who was
sitting on the front row of the dress
circle, picked up his wife and hung her
over the parquette. lie evidently in
tended to drop her like a hot potato,
hut was admonished by the gentlemen
beneath not to commit such a rash act.
They became so much interested in
these proceedings that they forgot the
terror that reigned around them in the
novel spectacle of a woman hangin
over them. The gentleman was finally
prevailed upon uot to part company
with his wife in the manner be propo
sed, and they may be happy yet. Two
ladies fainted, and were carried out of
the theatre. A gGod many of the
male portion of the audience gained
the street, looked up and saw the house

By this time the cause of all the
noise was ascertained, and Ben DeBar
appeared on the stage and explained it.
He said that the boys in the gallery
had overcrowded one of the the bench

was all the damage done to property.
It was so trifling that everybody
would have felt like laughing if they
hadn't been too badly scared, As it

Perhaps no one modi-

quired by everybody as
a cathartic, nor was ever
any before so universal
ly adopted into use, in
every conn try and among
nil classes, as this mild
but efficient purgative
J‘Ul. The obvious rea
son is, that it is a more re
liable and tsr more effec
tual remedy than any
other. Those who havo
tried it, know th.it it cured them; those who have
not, know that it cures their neighbors and friends,
and all know that wliat it does once it docs a'ways
— that it never fails through any fault or neglect of
its composition. Wo have thousands upon thou
sands of certificates of their remarkable cures of the
following complaints, but such cores aro known in
cverj- neighborhood, and we need not publish them.
Adapted to all agos and conditions In all climates;
containing neither calomel or any deleterious drug,
thev may be taken with safety by anybody. Their
sugar coating preserves them ever flesh and makes
them ploasant to take, while being purely vegetablo
no harm can arise from their use in any quantity.
They operate by their powerful influence on the
internal viscera to purify the blood and stimulate it
into health v action — roinove the obstructions of the
stomach, liowels, liver, and other organs of the
body, restoring their irregular action to health, and
by correcting,"wherever thoy exist, such derange
ments as are tho first origin of disease.
Minute directions are given in tho wrapper on
the box, for the following complaints, which these
Pills rapidly cure: —
For Ikyspepsla or IaflifSiMsa, Klillsts.
n««, Lnsituor and Low off Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom
ach and restore its healthy tone and action.
For Lbrr Complaint and its various symp
toms, Bilious Ueadaclic, Niclt Headache,
Jaundice or (Jreen Niclfness, Bilious
folic and Bilious Fevers, the/ should bo ju
diciously Liken for each case, to correct the diseased
action or remove the obstructions which cause it.
For is.rswatery or Diarrhoea, but ono mild
dose is generally required.
For Bbeuniatisin, (.out. Gravel, Palpi
tation of the Heart, Pain in the hide,
Back and liOins, thoy should be continuously
taken, as required, to change tho diseased action of
the system. With such change those complaints
disappear.
For Dropsy and Dropsical Swelling* they

should be t

dime the effect of a drastic purge.

For Suppression a large
as it produces tiie desired effect by sympathy.
As a IHnn-vr Pill, take one or two Villa to pro-
inote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, restores tho appetite,
i often ad-
an.l invigorates the system. Hence it is
vantapeous where no serious derangement exists.
One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a dose
of these Villa makes him feel decidedly better, from
their cleansing and renovating effect on the diges
tive apparatus.

this great inland highway:
“There is a grei^t deal of discussion
about a great commercial canal to be
built from the Mississippi, throug!
Tennessee*and Georgia, or the Caroii-
nas, to the Atlantic. The New York
capitalists are considering the matter,
and New York papers aye filled with
its details. The Governors of.several
Southern States are looking into the
matter, aud it may become a sort of a
government affair. There is shortly to
be a meeting of all the Governors of
the States interested, without distinc

look with interest to tho result of their
convention. It is said by skillful engin

The Chicago Tribune tells us that
“it is given out that the leading poli
cy of the government during the next
four ycarff*will be the acquisition of
of foreign territory.” It is intimated
that the government programme does
not embrace, for the present, the Brit
ish Provinces, but casts a sinister eye
upon the West Indies, Mexico and
and Central America. The Tribune
says that this “means aggressive war,
increase of debt and general embroil
ment.” The New York Herald, how
ever, opines that if such be the policy
of the government, it will be brought
about not by annexation, but by a
“League of Independent Republics.”

No one romedy la louder
called for by the nocessitioa
of tho American people than
a sure and safe cure for
Fever and Ague. Such
we arc now enabled to offer,
with a perfect certainty that
It will eradicate the disease, and with assur
ance, founded on proof, that no harm can
arise from its use in any quantity.
That which protects from or prevents this
disorder must bo of immense service in the
communities where it prevails. Prevention
is better than cure; for the patient escapes the
risk which he must run in violent attacks of
this baleful distemper. This “ Cur*” expels
tho miasmatic poison of Fever aad Ague
from tho system, aud prevents the develop
ment of the disease, if taken on the first
approach of its premonitory symptoms. A
great superiority of this remedy over any
other ever discovered for the speedy and cer
tain cure of Intermittents i6, that it contains
no Quinino or mineral; consequently it pro
duces no quinism or other injurious effects
whatever upon tho constitution. Thoso cured
by it are left as healthy as if they had never
had the disease.
Fever and Ague Is not alone the con
sequence of the miasmatic poison. A great
variety of disorders arise from its irritation,
among which are !Yenri*Ig-ia, ltbenma.

“CritE" expels the poison from tho blood,
and consequently cures them all alike. It is
an invaluabio protection to immigrants aud
persons travelling or temporarily residing in
the m.tlarions districts. If taken occasion
ally or daily while exposed to the infection,
that will bo excreted from the system, and
cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to
ripen into disease. Hence it is even more
valuable for protection than cure; and few
