oarseives, for the present, at least, in callicgat-

that Government should interfere as little as is
compatible with the safety of the individual and
the nation with the ordinary pursuits of the peo

a cow's horn, with three or four holes in it, and
their harp, or lyre, had only three strings. The
Grecian iyre had oniy seven strings, and was very
small, being held iu one hand The Jewish
trumpets, which made tha walls of Jericho fall
down, were only rams' horns. They bad no other
iaatrumenta! music but by percussion, of which
the greatest beast made was the psaltery, a small
triangular harp or lyre with wire strings, and
struck with an iron needle or stick. Their saebut
was something like a bagpipe ; the timbrel was a
tambourine ; and the dulcimer was a horizontal
harp, with wire strings, and stmek with a stick,
like the psaltery. They had no written music,
and had scarcely a vowel in tbeir Inngnage : and
yet, according to Josephus, had two hundred
thousand musicians p'tay.ng at the dedication of
the Temple of Solomon.

A few days since, it was announced
with a flourishing triumph, that the
President would take no part in the
Louisiana embroglio, but leave the
matter to bo decided by the laws of the
State and the Courts. This was re
garded as a happy augury as to his fu
ture policy towards the South. But
this spasmodic leniency, or rather,
just now, interference with the inter
nal matters of a sovereign State, so-
called, it seems has been bitterly re
pented of, and now the candidate for a
third term goes back, upon his own
course with a double vengeance. Hear
what that staid old Democratic jour

it.

these questions usually is : “Lava

was swallowed up under eighty feet
of lava. If works cf art, bronzes and
pictures have been miraculously pre

shield of lava, yielding only to a cut

the ravages of time.” The explana

fire rolling upon the city, rising like
the tidal swell, surging in through
doors and windows, sweeping around
and moulding everything, then slow

a girl who was a member ot the
church, and while ill her company,
being on his very best behavior, he
was careful not to use any language

one day driving up a hill he burst

to his animals, never dreaming that
the object of his affection was stand

profanity. But when she opened up
on him the batteries of reproof, he
knew she was there. But he held his
ground. “Do you call that swearing?”
asked he. “If you do, 1 don’t know
what you’d say if you heard that fel
low jist behind me exhort an impeni
tent mule.”

continues, apply hot cloths wrung out
