an erroneous opinion prerailing among
many persons unacquainted with as
tronorry, who are in the habit of de*
mot sfrntii g fl»»t »he lia'vep' moon
cui(< h( ll<«‘ tune ui harvest, iei ilia'
happen when it may, the following
may not prove unacceptable to such of
our readers. The moon, during the
week in which she is full, about the
time of harvest, rises sooner after sun-
aetting, and with less difference be
tween the two successive risings, than
she does in any other full moon week
in the year. By these means she af
fords an almost immediate supply of
lightafter sunset, which is verybene-
fical for gathering in the harvest and
fruits of the earth. Hence this full
moon is distinguished from all others
in the year by the appellation of the
harvest moon. To conceive the reason
of this, it may be first considered that
the moon is always opposite to the sun
when she is full; that she is full in the
signs of Pisces and Aries, in August
and September, those being the signs
opposite to Virgo and Libra, the signs
occupied by the sun in that season?
and that when she is in those two parts
of the ecliptic she rises from the hori
zonin northern latitudes in a smaller
angle, and consequently with the least
difference of time between two succes
sive risings than when she is in any
other part of her orbit, as may be easi
ly shown by the celestial globe. There
fore, since the moon’s orbit does not
deviate much from the ecliptic, she
rises with less difference of time and
more immediately after sunset about
harvest thun when she in full at other
seasons of the year. The sun enters
Libra on the 23d of September, and
the full moon which is nearest that
day is, properly speaking, the harvest
moon.
Galen’s Advice.—When the great
Galen was very old, he wrote the fol
lowing words: “I beseech all persons
who shall read this work not to de
grade themselves to a level with the
brutes, by eating and drinking promis
cuously whatever pleases their pal
ate. Whether they understand phys
ic or not, let them consult their rea
son, and observe what agrees and what
does not agree with them, that, like
wise men, they may adhere to the
use of such things as conduce to their
health, and forswear everything which,
by their own experience, they find to
do them harm; aud let them be as
sured that by a diligent observation
and practice of this rule, they may
enjoy a good share of health, and sel
dom stand in need of physic or physi
cians.”
Signature ok the Cross.—The
mark which persons who are unable
to write are required to make instead
of their signatures, is in the form of a
cross: and this practice, having form
erly been followed by kings and nobles,
is constantly referred to as an instance
of the deplorable ignorance of ancient
times. This signature is not, however,
invariably a proof of such ignorance.
Anciently the use of the mark was not
confinedtu illiterate persons;for among
the Saxons the mark o' the cross, as an
attestation of the good faith of the per
son signing, was required tobeattached
to the signature of those who could
write, as well as to stand in the place
of the signature of those who could not
write. In those times, if a man could
write, or even read, his knowledge was
considered proof presumptive that he
was in holy orders. The clericus, or
clerk, was synonymous with penman;
and the laity, or the people who were
notclerks.did not feel any urgent neces
sity for the useof letters- The ancient
use of the cross was therefore universal,
alike by those who could and those
who could not write; it was, indeed,
the symbol of au oath, from its sacred
associations, as well as the mark gen
erally adopted. Hence the origin of
the expression, “God save the mark
as a torni >f ejaculation approaching
the character ot an oath.
Colic.—A strong decoction of coffee
is very good to t ure colic in either men
or horses. So sa\s one who has often
proved it by a trial.
Colic in horses is frequently, though
not infallibly, cured by administering
from half to three-fourths ot an ounce
of laudanum.
Warming Cold Boiled Potatoes.
—Slice and put them in a basin with a
little milk or water, some cream if you
have it, aud a little salt. Let it remain
on the stove until it is thoroughly
heated through, stir, ing olten to pre
vent its stickiug, a bit oi fish left from
a former meal or some beaten egg is a
nice addition to it.
The Land Grabbers.
The New York World continues a
vigorous war on the Radical party,
very properly saddling the present un
fortunate condition ot uffairs on the
party which has been <n control of the
Executive and Legislative departments
of the Guvernim nt for the past
twelve years. It says ten days ago the
financial community both here and
eiSewheie held v. hat ; te by courtes\
cat led securities amounting (exclusive
of Uuited States bonds) to at least S2.
000,000,000. To day tlie»e80-calle«i se
curities are estimated to be worth $1,-
000,000,000, and halt of them are actu
ally unsalable at any price. Banks
and fiuancial institutions are gorged
with them; depositors who supposed
their savings to be in good hands find
that their means are locked up in un
convertible bonds and stocks, while
bankers and financial men of great
means stand unable to devise relief with
plenty of means at their disposal. What
has caused this depression ? Is it in
reality only a loss ot faith? Let the
truth be told. The landgrabs, without
which no mushroom railroads could
have started into life, are at the very
bottom of this disaster. The iaodgrant
system, it it cao be called a system, was
from the very outset a swindle. The
lobbies which gut the grants, the
schemers who started the roads to be
built, the bankers who lent themael v. s
to sell the bonds, are all parties to the
great swindle But the responsibility
must fall upon the law-makers who
themselves first ol all to this cor
ruption.”
