The Convocation of Episcopal clergymen iu
this city'ast week, gave our citizens an opportunity
to eriiy a series of interesting services at St Ste
phen's Church- The following ministers were in at-
jeadacee, viz : Rev. Messrs. Clark, Di vsdale, Kramer,
S-ese and Lucas.

Mr. H. W. Thomas, has opened a choice stock of
Hmiiv and Fancy Groceries at the old stand of Mr.
Adolph Joseph, iu Wailzftidei's building. Ilia .dock
of fancy groceries and confectionery was selected with
sreat care in Northern markets by himself, and are de
licious. He will also open a Restaurant in a few days,
where fresh fish, oysters, game, &<• , will be seived in
the best style;
The neat and attiactive arrangement of the store—
the great variety of good things, temptingly display,
el—and the polite and agreeab'e attention of a trio
of as clever gentlemen as our city can boast', all pro
nounce the new establishment a first-class success.
Mr. W- A. Williams, a Section-Master of the Macon
k Augusta Railroad, died suddenly iu this city on last
Thursday morning. He had congestive chill and lived
on v about 04 hours after he was taken. His wife died
only a few months since, leaving several small child

Mr. 11.1 Johnson, living in this county near the line
of Washington, on Town creek, killed a rattles cake,
on 15th iust., which had 15 rattles and a button, and
measured 5 1 0 feet. Mr. J shot the snake, tearing
his head pu tty well into pieces and when he thought
he was good dead puled his tail across a pole to cut
off his rattles ns a trophy, when to the treat surprise
and horror of Johnson the snake gave a wiggle and
flung his bloody head about J’s legs. There was
some tall jumping, you bet

The Masonic Fraternity of this city sent twenty-
fire dollars, last week, to the Mayor of Memphis for
the benefit of the sufferers from yellow fever.

The author of the ‘Bench and Bar of Georgia ,
and other works, died at Columbus on Wednesday
last, 22d inst. Maj. Miller was a genial, clever gen
tleman and many warm friends in this and other States
will hear with sorrow that his mission on earth lias
ended. He will be remembered by our citizens as
associate Editor of the Southern Recorder for some
time, about the beginning of the late war. Ilia re
nmina were taken to Butler for interment. Peace to
his ashes.

. Goff on the 16th iiist., .with a
gun, mention of which has been made in our paper
heretofore, and who has been in our jail, was brought
before Justices F air and Brooks iu this city ou last
Saturday, the 25th inst. For the prosecution Messrs.
Sanford A Furman ar.d McAdoo appeared as counsel;
and for the defendant, Messrs. McKinley, Crawford
and \\ llliamson- The witnesses examined were the
husband and grandron ot the wounded lad/, who
testified to the shooting as done by the defendant Har
ris, and Dr. \Y, II. Hall of this city, who was called
as surgeon to attend to the wunndtd lady. Dr. H.
testified that the wound was dangerous, and the result
uncertain tor some days; but now the probabilities
weie in favor of .Mrs. Goff’s recovery. Harris was
admitted to bail iu I tie sum of $2.5! 0.
