iftlo bird* now seek their nest;
bfiby sleeps on mother's breast;
TBuAi vest all tby children rest,
* I God of the weary.
The sailor prayeth on the sea;
The little ones at mother’s knee;
Now comes the penitent to tbee,
God of the weary.
!
The orphan puts away his fears ;
troubled hopes for happier years;
dryest all the mourner’s tears,
God of the weary.
Thou sendeth rest to tired feet ;
To little toilers slumbers sweet;
To aching hearts, repose complete;
God of the weary.
In grief, perplexity or pain,
None ever come to thee in vain,
Thou makest life a joy again.
God of the weary.
Wesleep that we may wake renewed.
To serve thee as the children should,
With love, and zeal, and gratitude,
God of the weary.

Thoughts For the Month
•fte’ harvest is gathered, and autumn stands
Serenely thoughtful with folded hands.’’
Little remains to be done upon the farm,
to wind up the buisness of the year.
; early maturity of crops and the fa
ille autumn for all harvesting opera
tions, have left less unfinished work than
usual. Hands must now be paid off and
ample arrangements made for Christmas
week, when no labor can be expected from
the frolicsome sons and daughters of
Hitlh' Pay the last cent due them, and
tfSu* no obstacles in the way of their en
joyment. Any effort to restrain, will end
in utter failure, without any good. We
advocate a general relaxation of business
and care, for both whites and blacks, at
tke close of the year. Family re unions
—social enjoyments, gifts and acts of
i^mlhess to tlie poor nnd suffering—let
♦flwitork at least of the fifty-two be given
up to these, that the fires of love and grati
tude many be kindled anew.—Whilst
business is right and proper, and we
oughLfco be "dilligent therein, let us re
number that it is not all of life to make
lnow-yT It may take wings and fly away,
but the gentle charities of life will not
only brighten the world around us now,
but follow’ us when we depart. Is it too
much- to consecrate one week in the year
dxl home and the heart?
Although gloom and despondency have
rested upon the South of late, we confi
dently look for a brighter future. The
•disasters of the hour cannot fall to pro
duce a rich harvest. We shall be more
than compensated, if they put an end to
the extravagance of living—to the ruinous
credit system in vogue—to the specula
tivojjpirit so rampant—to the eager haste
after riches—and if they shall restore
some of the simplicity of the olden time
—itg frugality and thrift, its pay as you
go, work within means, live within means
practice. If they shall teach farmers to
raise provisions at home—raise their own
horses and mules—make axe handles and
hoe helves, etcetera, and thus get back
some of that independence, of which we
have neard so much, but have seen
so little of late—if they shall induce
farfflfers to keep close watch on the Dr.
and Cr. columns in their operations, and
thus teach them where they make and
v/hero they lose—that brains are no less
important than’musclc, and that theirs
takes rank at the very head of the learned
professions—could these be purchased
by the monetary losses of the present year
they would have been bought very, very
far below’ their real value.
» Let us like wise men forsake the fol
lies of the recent past, and with renewed
courage and ‘-purged vision,” prepare for
the labors of another year.
A GERMAN*SUNDAY.
The German's idea of Sunday is any
thing but Puritanic. It is the very op
posite. It is for them a day of amuse
ment. It is no unusual thing to be asked
by a German on Monday morning, “Well
how did you amuse yourself yesterday?”
There are those among the Germans, of
course, who respectand keep the Sabbath
but then there are always enough of them
who do not; and to judge by the num
bers in which they frequent their places
of amusement on Sunday—the parks,
beer-gardens, and public halls—a stranger
might possibly be tempted to inquire
whether the Germans had any idea of
Sabbath. Men, women, and children, older
1 An with their waves, and younger ones
wftli their Sweethearts, throng these places
every Sunday, and enjoy themselves, care
less of what impression they make on
their fellow-citizens of American origin,
tef whom the sound of brass instruments
on the Sabbath air is anything but wel
come or edifying. In the cold days of
winter, w hen the parks and beer-gardehs
are dreary and shorn of their beauty, the
German seeks amusement in some hall
instead. Here he treats himself to a com
pound of rather heterogeneous elements—
to music, beer, and smoke; and to all of
them at once. Any Sunday afternoon in
ike cold of winter you may find him, with
hjs wife cr child, or both, in some large
hall, oiie of a hundred, smoking his ineer
sclianm or his cigar, sipping his beer,
wine, or coffee, and listening to a selection
from Meyerbeer or Beethoven. Were it
summer, he would add the ador of roses
fumes of his tobacco and the smell
of his beer; for he is as fond of flowers as
li£.-is of any of these, and is never happier
than when the air, trembling to the notes
of the orchestra, is redolent with tobacco
si^pke, the perfume of the rose, heliotrope-
aiia hop, and he is himself in the midst
of them all.—Atlantic Monthly.

V PIL-V-Sj
THE ONLY KNOWN MEDICINE
that at the same Time
Forges, Purifies, and Strengthens the
System.
Dr. Tail s Pills are composed of many ingredi
ents. Prominent among them are Sarsaparilla aud
Wild Cherry, so united ns to act together; the one
through its admixture with other substances, purify
ing aud purging; while the other is strengthening the
system. Thus these Pills are at the same time atonic
and a cathartic,a desideratum long sought for bymed-
ical men, but never before discovered. In other
words, they do the work of two medicines and do it
much better than any two wo know of, for they re
move nothing from the system but impurities, so that
while they purge they also strengthen and hence they
cause no debility and are followed by no reaction.
Dr. Tail’s Pills have a wonderful influence on
the blood. They not only purify without weakening
it, but they remove all noxious particles from the
chyle before it is converted into fluid, and thus makes
impure blood an utter impossibility. As there is no
debilitation, so there is no nausea or sickness attend
ing the operation of this most excellent medicine,
which never strains or tortures the digestive organs,
but causes them to work in a perfectly natural man
ner; bonce persons taking them do not become palo
and emaueiated, but on the contrary, while all impu
rities are being removed, the couibiued actios of the
Sarsaparilla and Wild Cherry purifies aud iuvigorates
the body, and a robust state of health is the result of
their united action. Price, 25 cents a box. Sold by
all druggists. Depot 48 Cortlandt St, New York.
