STATE LUNATIC ASYLUM,

Superintendent & Resident Physician,
Near Milledgeville, Ga., Dec. 15. 1«73.
Editors Union & Rccordcv:
Gentlemen :—To relieve those who
have friends in the Asylum, from unneces
sary anxiety and alarm, resulting from
eTft ggerated statements common on such
occasions, I think it proper to state,
that we have here, two cases of small
pox, occurring in the male department of
colored patients. Those cases have been
properly removed and isolated, and we
have reason to hope, that there will be
few other cases in that department; and
no reasonable ground for apprehension,
■ns* it will extend at all to the main
buildings, occupied by the whites, or to
that occupied by the colored female pa
tients.
Yours very respectfully,
THOS. F. GREEN,
Supt. & Res’dt. Physician.

following, clipped from an ex
change, makes a timely and suitable do
cal for us, and we copy it and press the
argument upon our citizens:
Hard times and hard weather have en
tered into copartnership. There are sev
eral poor families in this community who
will have a hard struggle to keep them-
selves supplied with food and fuel this
winter. You who have comfortable homes,
cheerful fires, and well filled larders,
close not your ears to the sufferings of
those around you who may be in destitute
circumstances, and probably afflicted with
disease. Remember Christ said "the poor
ye will have with you always," and “as
much as he done it unto the least of these,
he did it also unto me.” Let not the
Righteous Judge have to say, ‘T was
naked and ye clothed me not; I was an
Iiungred and ye gave me no meat: I was
sick and ye visited me not.” Charity eov-
ereth a multitude of sins, and God
knows some of you have sinned enough!
that a life time of giving alms will not
more than cover your transgressions. But
let what you give to the poor, b- 0 not with
a view of receiving the praise of men, but
with an eye single to God’s glory, and the
allieviation of suffering humanity.

Kentucky, and Mr. Thomas, of Atlanta,
for their valuable assistance in making
the entertainment a success.
tGT Two or three cases of Small Pox
have broken out near the city. Every
precaution has been taken to prevent its
Bpread, and there is no occasion for
alarm. Wo only mention it to show to
the people the necessity for immediate
vaccination. Dri Case will vaccinate with

For a week past our streets have
presented a busy scene. People rushed
about between wagons and drays un
loading and loading cotton in the streets
and cotton bales which lined the side
walks, and yet our merchants arc not
happy. The year is rapidly drawing to
a close and much business remains un
settled, and cash trade is not what it
ought to be at this season of the year.
Settlements ought to be made as fast
as possible.—-keep the money circulatin
and a little of it will pay many debts.
Let no man keep money in his pod
which ho owes. Tho best preparation for
the enjoyment of the liollidays is to pay
debts.

A Visit to Linton.
Messrs. Editors :—With four other
young men and three young ladies of this
county, I had the pleasure of a visit to
Linton, Hancock county, and to hear a
temperance address delivered by Mr. Ja
cob Stanley on last Saturday afternoon
before a very attentive audience. The
young and gifted orator made some very
forcible aud well timed remarks: also il
lustrating the temperate and fruitful man
by the side of a worn, tattered and torn
and intemperate man, much to tlie amuse
ment and satisfaction of tlie audience.
Linton Council No. 65 U. F. T. cun
tinues to prosper, having about sixty
members—only lost two or three by res
ignation and expulsion.
At night the young people collected at
the house of my good friend Dr. John
Stone to Bpend the evening in a social
way; and such a display of beauty is not
often seen—made we young men feel ’twas
good to be there. I can only say we had
a good time. Baldwin.

Many persons-say they would like to
take the papers but"they live too far from
the post-office ! Our friend Mr. Gideon
Holscy, of Hancock, lives twelve miles
from the office, and yet ho says, although
he can't send for his paper every week,
he would not do without it for five dol
lars a year. He always pays for his pa
per when he sells his first bag of cotton;
which latter action we especially commend
to our patrons.

THE 0*L¥ KNOWN MEDICINE
that at the Rome Time
Purges, Purifies, and Strengthens the
System.
Dr. Tull's Pills are composed of many ingredi
ents Prominent among them are Sarsaparilla and
Wild Cherry, so united ns to act together; the one,
through its admixture with other substances, purify
ing and purging; while the other is strengthening the
system. Thus these Pills are at the same time a tonic
mid a cathartic, a desideratum krug sought for by tned-
■oal men, but never before discovered. In other
words, they do the work oi two medicines aud do it
much bettsr than any two we know of, tor they re
move nothing from the system bnt impunt.es, so that
While they purge they also strengthen aud hence they
cause no debility and are followed by no reaction.
Dr Tail’s Pill* have a wonderful influence on
the blood. They not only purify without weakening
it, bat they remove all noxious particles from the
chyle before it is converted into fluid, and thus makes
impure blood an utter impossibility. As there is no
debilitatiou, so there is no nausea or sickness attend-
operation of this most excellent medicine,
never strains or tortures the digestive organs,
