Washington, Ga., Dec. 17th, 1873.
Editors Chronicle & Sentinel:
A large number of citizens of Wilkes
county assembled in the Court House at
noon to-day, to consider the necessity of
calling a State Convention. On motion of
Judge Reese, Capt. Wingfield was called
to the Chair, and S. H. Hardeman, Esq.,
appointed Secretary. After a statement
from the Chair of the object of the meet
ing, Gen. Toombs arose and addressed
the audience in his usually eloquent and
forcible manner. He pointed out the er
rors of the present State Constitution. It
was in conflict with all good government,
even with the fourteenth and fifteenth
amendments of the Federal Congress.—
The liberties it allowed to legislators, in
heaping burdens of taxation upon the
people, was an outrage upon civilization,
and would entail upon posterity dis
grace and ruin. The people had a right
to be heard, and none but a villian would
attempt to defeat the expression of the
popular will. Atlanta was afraid that a
convention would move the Capital back
to Milledgeville, bnt should a mushroom
town, that had sprung up by fraud and
corruption, choke down the people of
Georgia, and say where their Capital
Capt- James H. Nichols, of White
county, it has been said, owns the hand
somest country residence and estate in
Georgia. He is the leading stock raiser
»nd hay cultivator in that section of Geor
gia. His place, it is claimed, cost him
$100,000.
