AUGUSTA CARDS.
Itself in behalf of the jaapos-
ed Ci}iistitntionaI Cob von don iruge \ To-
baHly than any other print, and we think
it could not devote its columns more pro
fitably than in seeking to place the sub- j
ject fairly before the public ; for it is ev
idently the question of the times.
“Hon. John C. Reed, of Lexington, I
has been called out by the Chronicle &
Sentinel, who, in a communication of >
some length, shows, very clearly to our
min i, that the calling of such a conven- j
tic-n is imperiously demanded, and should \
be delnved no longer than the forms of !
law reqnire.”
We hnd the following in the Hawkins-
ville Dispatch:
Our Odious State Conktitoktoj.—But (
f3w papers in Georgia oppow a Conven
tion of the people for tire purpose o' 1 ^
changing the present Constitution, and ii; ., r ,
the people of the Stat*: wore aware |iov,
much better they t mid make it by ft few
alterations, they would demand a Con-1 fin
vention at once. I e present Constitu- l(
tion was thrust upon our people at a time ;
when they were under the power of ted j u
eraJ bayonets, which fact was so lepug- j
nant to their feeliugs as free citizens !
tliat thousands of tlu-m refused to go to
the polls and vote against it. Bullock
was running for Governor, and it is to |
his party that we are indebted for the j
ratification of the Constitution and its ;
odious provisions. The scalawags and
misreprestutativiu who were assembled
in Atlanta,in the earl* part of l- : >8 had
strong apv-sLensions that 'he ] Mnple
would s-n'in d°.T d wand a Aanje in
their legislation, and call for an alteration
of the Constitution. To place as great i
an obstacle as possible in tire way of j
amendments to this instrument, they de
dared that it should not be altered or
amended except by a vote of two-thirds
of two Legislatures elected success;' eW. j
Thus we are forced to submit to the ope- >
ntion of laws that caunot be amended ov
repealed unless bv our representatives
elected on different occasions, or a direct >
action by the people to disposo of the '
matter. * Ii the pioeent Legislature, j
which convenes iti the early part of Jan- j
nary, w ill submit the question to a vote, j
we are satisfied the capital will be re- ; 1 .
moved to Milledgeviile, where it right ,„ r ;;
fully belongs, and some very wholesome r -"j
and more important chang- s wi;i be made '
i 1 the presenc Constitute n, if a new one
be not entirely framed.
ta«y The Cartcrsville .Standardstrongly
favors a convention, and thinks one
should bo called. It discovers no eppo- t
sition thereto among the press of the I GkJ
State outside of Atlanta.
The Grifiin News also calls fora cot: () •'
vention, and remarks tbit the idea of the
“expense of such a body' preventing its j ’fi",
sission is no argument against it. fbr i
there are several much-needed cLung<-s in j
our constitution, most any of which ii
would more than pay the cost, in the way i
of benefiting the pooplo of the State.
Let the question bo thoroughly discuss-
ed, let the people meet together and
speak* ont in primary meetings h n HI'.th
let their views iv canied out/’
