BEr. Saxe’s Lecture.
The distinguished Poet and Lecturer,
John G. S axe, arrived in our city by the
M. & A. Railroad on last Friday mom
ing. the 20tli inst., where he was received
by two of the eitizens who were signers
of the letter inviting him hither; Dr. J.
W. Herty, Mayor of our city, and Col.
W G. McAdoo. the Literary Editor of
our paper. He was escorted by Dr. Herty
to the hospitable mansion of Dr. S. G.
White of our city, whose guest he became
during his sojourn among us. As the
day advanced the clouds gathered in
gloomier strength, and a succession of
thunder showers in the afternoon ushered
in the most dismal and chipping evening
imaginable.
Notwithstanding these untoward cir
cumstances, a number of our leading
and intelligent citizens called on Mr.
Saxe during the day ; and at the Lecture
hour in the evening, all were sm-prised—
even Mr. Saxe himself—to see such a
goodly throng of listeners in the grand
old Representative Hall of the ex Capi
tol where so much of the history of
Georgia has been made. The audience
was very far smaller than it would have
belli with better weather; and yet its
highly respectable proportions, assem
bled ‘-under difficulties,” attested the
high appreciation our refined and cultiva
ted people have of Mr. Saxe and of the
incessant lightning flashes of wit and
humor which illuminate all that Mr.
Saxe has ever written. Wo have heard
many of our people speak in terms of
highest praise of the enjoyment of the
evening ; and we are sure that the lovers
of the highest order of literary wit, and
true humor uncontaminated with gross
ness or impurity of every sort, left the
Hull delighted with Mr. Saxe.
Our people will loug remember with
pleasure the intellectual feast of last Fri
day evening.
Mr. Saxe left our city on last Saturday
morning and lectured in Augusta on
Monday evening last. Thence he is pass
ing homeward, and will deliver a Lecture
tomorrow evening iu Raleigh, N. C.
In person, Mr. Saxe is a stalwart
“Green Mountain boy”, a trifle over six
feet in height, well developed, with a
pleasing and intellectual face, and agree
able manners: a fine illustration of the
Latin mens sane in cokpork sano. Mr.
Saxe’s lectures always draw crowded
houses; and this is not strange, since
the great popularity of his poems, as at
tested by the number of editions called
for, is next to the first on this side of
the Atlantic: Longfellow having reached
forty editions, the highest number of the
American poets, and Mr. Saxe’s poems
having gone through thirty nine editions.
It should be stated that Mr. Saxe came
hither in response to a letter of invitation
which reached him at Columbus, signed
by a number of our leading citizens;
and that his visit has more than fulfilled
the expectations of the gentlemen who
invited him, and of the public.

The use of this Guano for the past Eight Years has established its character for
excellence and reliability. I need only assure consumers that the Guano brought
into market this season is precisely the same in composition and quality as that
heretofore sold.
The large fixed Capital invested by this Company in this business furnishes the
best guarantee of continued excellence. The Company has a greater interest in
maintaining its standard of quality than any nnmber of consumers can have
Orders received and information furnished, on application to my Agents at vari
ous Local Markets.
