Free Nelioots,
Public Schools are now in successful operation in
Savannah, Augusta, Macon, Atlanta, Columbus, Rome,
Americas, Griffin, Bruns wick, and several other places,
The system in all these cities is pretty much the
same The expenses, not including buildings, amount
tconly about $15 to $10, per scholar, per annum.
These schools also obtain assistance from the Peabody
fand. They have been successful everywhere they
have been introduced iu Georgia, and are contributing
more than any other one thing to the prosperity of
those cities where they have been established. We
ought to have a free school in Milledgeville, and can
have ona just as well as not. We hope our City Coun-
cil will take hold of the matter. If they are unwilling
toacton their own responsibility, let them taken vote
uf the citizens and see if they are iu favor of Free
.Schools. If the decision is favorable, let the City
Council appoint a Board of Lducatiou, composed of
good practical businessmen, who will proceed to or
ganize the School upon the plan which has been found

In Blackwood's Magazine for March we find con
tinuations of the serials "Valentine and his Brother,
and "Disorder in Dreamland," and the first part of a
new story, ‘ Alice Lorraine,” which promises to Bur-
pas's the others in interest. “ The Two Speransky—
Part II.,” tells of Elizabeth Spernnsky-Bagreeff, who,
though unhappy in her domestic iite, was the centre of
a brilliant circle in St. Petersburgh, was a great trav
eler, mid the author of several novels and other books
written in French. ‘ Lord Stanhope and the Histori
ans cf Oueen Am o's Reign,” is perhaps the most
striking article iu this number. It contains sketches
of many of the prominent men of the day, including
Murlboiougb, Godolpbin, Orator Henley, etc., besides
a brief notice of some of the more important events of
that reign. There are also a couple of poems, ‘‘Hora-
tiau Lyrics,” and two political articles, ‘‘TheElections
of 1863 and 1874,” and “Mr. Gladstone’s Night Attack
and its Results.’’

■Ian. Iversaa V. Harris.
Looking at the members of the legal profession in
our Court-Room on yesterday, we were pained to miss
the form of one who occupied for very many years a
moat distinguished place there—who had presided
Judge of that Court, and who had adorned the highest
tribnnalof the State, finally, with a learning and abili
ty rarely, if ever equaled, and excelled by none. We
are aware that some of the decisions of Judge Harris on
the Supreme Court Bench were regarded by snch men
as Hon. A. H. Stephens, Hon. Linton Stephens and
other lawyers of that class, as the ablest which had
ever been delivered in that Court.
Judge Harris is yet confined to his bed by severe
illness; but while the body is frail, his mind glows with
ail of its old brightness; and we pray that he may yet
move among us as a participant in our daily affairs
before the ending.
Butler and His Personal Danger.—-
On the 18th of next November he will be
56 years old. He has never been sick.
His constitution has been like iron. He
has worked for ten years as few men ever
work, even in this busiest of lands. His
favorite saying has been that when he
retired at night, unless he was asleep in
five minutes, he thought something was
the matter. He has enjoyed absolute,
uninterrupted health, and has reveled in
it. But there must be an end to all
things, and especially to overworked
men. Butler has grown obese, and, in
ferentially, apoplectic. His political
fights begin to tell on him. The con
tests at Worcester have helped pull him
down. The Simmons fight set his nerves
into a frenzy. His head was clear, but
his blood was hot, and his face livid at
times. He had wound himself up to a
fearful pitch of excitement. When the
victory was won and the relapse came,
the blood left his face, he became quiet
and seemed to have weakened percepti
bly. His friends on the floor said he
looked fifteen years older. But with his
immense interest on his hands there is
no release from the tread-mill—no long
hours of relaxation. His affairs are as
inexorable as those of an Emperor. Some
day, his life will go out like the light of
a hastily-snuffed candle.—Washington

Superior Court.
The adjourned term of our Superior Court began its
abort* on Monday la^t (30th ult.): lion. G. T. Bartlett
presiding. Solicitor General Preston was in attend
ance; the juries also ; the State Docket was taken up
and the whole machinery of the ‘’Temple of Justice *
was put iu motion with commendable promptitude.—
At the present wriLing the Court is still in session. The
Grand Jury, however, was discharged on Monday,
having finished the business before them, and have
made some excellent recommendations in their Gener
al Presentments.
Judge Bartlett is vigorously carrying out his avow
ed determination to empty our jail during the present
Term. In some remarks to the Grand Jury just be
fore the discharge ot that body, the Judge earnestly
urged such legislation in the future as would allow two
weeks instead of one for the regular term of our Supe
rior Court. The Judge believes that the regular ac
cumulation of business will be too great for despatch
in a term of one week only ; and his remarks showed
that longer regular terms would be preferable to ad
journed terms, as being more economical of the time
and convenience of our citizens-
Since the foregoing was penned, we learn that Hon.
K. H. Pottle of Warrenton has arrived and is bolding
our Court by interchange with Judge Bartlett. We
oxtend the welcome of our office and the “pnvilegee
of our “sanctum’'to Judge Pottle during his eojeoni
