Bishop Pierce preached an earnest ser
mon to a rather small congregation at the
Methodist Church on last Sabbath.
We are pleased to learn that Alderman
Lyman H. Compton, who has been quite
ill of pneumonia, is better and hopes of
his recovery are entertained.
Pittsburg Academy.—We are pleased
to learn that this Academy, which has
just been completed, will be opened for
the reception of pupils to-morrow, snd
the people of that neighborhood will
have, what they have long desired, a first
rate school. The teacher, Mr. J. W.
Fraysor, is well qualified, and will doubt
less receive the patronage and encour
agement he deserves. An advertisement

City Taxes.—By order of the Finance
Committee, the clerk of the city Council
will close his books on the 20th icst., and
issue Executions against all who have
not paid their taxes at that time. A word
to the wise is sufficient.
Col. Wm. McKinley has resigned the
position of member of the Board of Edu
cation of Baldwin county. He was the
President of the Board. We presume the
Grand Jury will fill the vacancy in the
Board at tho February Term of tho Su
perior Court.
A preliminary trial of Horace Wilson
and P. Meadows was held at the Court
Room in the State House on Friday and
Saturday last—Justices Fair and Brooks
presiding. Tho testimony taken in the
ease has H>een sent to Judge Bartlett at 1
Monticello who will decide whether the
parties will be admitted to bail. In the
meantime the prisoners have been sent to
Atlanta jail for safe keeping.
We would call attention to the adver

Governor Brown has taken the joint
committee of the Legislature to the Dade
coal mines, where the}- will investigate
the condition of the convicts at work
there. The committee are expected to
have a good time oven if tho convicts do

Death of Mr*- Ramsay.
On Monday last, 25th inst, at her resi
dence in Midway near onr city, died Mrs.
Mary Ann Ramsay, wife of Mr. R. H.
Ramsay of Midway.
Mrs. Ramsay had attained the age al
lotted by tho Psalmsit to mortal existence,
haring entered on her seventy-first year,
since October -ast. For more than half
of that period, she had resided in Bald
win county, honored and respected for
her Christian virtues by all who knew
her, idolized by her husband, her sons
and her daughters, whom she leaves on
earth behind her, and dying with a full
assurance of a blessed immortality based
on a consistent christain life extending
through more than half a century.
The Direct of Advertising.
Last week we received a letter from
a gentleman in Telfair county who want
ed to engage the services of a lady Teach
er. We knew of none and dropped a
notice in the paper—since then we have
had numerous applications from every
section of the State, which we have re
ferred to the aforesaid gentleman.
Dancino Academy.—Prof. Robison
opened his Dancing School, at the Rep
resentative Hall, on yesterday. The Pro
fessor is well known to our citizens, hav
ing taught here in former years. Par
ents who wish their children to acquire the
graceful accomplishment of dancing will

To-Night's Entertainment.—A peep
“ behind the scenes” last evening at a
formal rehearsal for to-night’s entertain
ment, at the old Senate Chamber, for the
benefit of the Methodist Parsonage, gave
aasurance of a brilliant performance this
evening. An elegantly decorated stage,
festooned with flowers, lovely maidens.
Hug music, laughable and touching scenes
all call for a full house to-night.
