time more than four cents a pound,
and this aifords an assurance of safe
values which it is impossible to ig
nore, fortified as it is by other cirs
cumstances of more or less signifi-
cance. The Liverpool market has
become quite active, with a partial
advance in prices. That market re
quires more liberal shipments from
tho American ports, and bid higher
prices to stimulate them. Besides
it begins to be suspected that the
crop for the current year has been
over-estimated in placing it at to
4A million bales. The planting seas
on was late, the acreage without im
portant increase, the growing crops
was assailed by drouths in some sec
tions, floods itt others, and latterly
by storms, high winds, excessive
rains and unseasonable cold in va
rious parts. Much injury must have
been done. The large receipts at
the ports for the past month are of
n J IT J little significance. They are accoun
Keady M a d 6 LlOlllin^ ted for by the fact that the planters
J ! needed money and carried forth a
j portion of their crops. This the
navigable condition of the South
ern rivers favored their doing, where
as one year ago they were nearly dry.
The large receipts come from a por
tion of the South where the crop
was matured early by drouth. Cot
ton goods aro selling more freely,
though at low prices. Thus there
is no leading influence operating to
i depress prices, and the advance that
has taken place is quite natural.

Augusta Constitutionalist of the
10th, says:
The dispatches published this
morning, say that Hayes is elected
Governor of Ohio by 4,000 majority,
that the Senate is Radical by 2 votes
and the House by 12. The dispatch
from Washington to the Baltimore
Smi, that it was not a party triumph,
that it was financial, hard or soft
rnonev, and that upon ft trial of
strength between the parties, pure
and simple, would result in a Dem
ocratic triumph by 40,000 majority,
is important. Washington politis
cians who are not carried away by
the noise of the hour, so say. Had
the people of Ohio been called upon
on tho 12th to face the question of
four more years of Radical rule of
the Federal Government, the result
would have been far different The
real issues upon which the Presiden
tial battle will be fought were but
j remotely introduced into the Ohio
: election, and the people not asked
to determine them. It was a fight
on the skirmish line before the siege
train came up. Nor was it a defeat,
all this aside. It is the small advan
tage of 4,000 in a grand total vote
of 500,000, the Democracy coming
out of the battle with 30,000 more
, men than they ever had before. The
' change of only one vote in every
hundred will turn the scale, and it
is the Republicans who are losing
ground now and the Democrats who
are gaining strength all over the
, country by tho elapse of time.
