John Clark, Jr.,& Co s.,
Given in this city at the Senate Chamber
by teachers and pupils of the Southern Ft -
male College, LaGrange, Ga., on Wednes
day evening last, was honored with a large
and appreciative audience; and the per
formance merited far more than the pat
ronage extended. Next to the Berger fami
ly, it is the best, in all its appointments,
that has visited the city for years, and far
t he best amateur company we ever saw.
We hope the talented groupof teachers and
scholars will receive a very liberal patron
age wherever they exhibit.
For many years it was rebukingly said,
that Milledgevilie people never turned out
to see any show but a circus or a negro
minstrel company. For years, it was true,
but it is not so to-day. Any companv pos
sessing merit, whether in music, mirth or
mental accomplishments, will be patronised
in Milledgevilie. But our people are so of
ten imposed on by counterfeits, wo do
not wonder that they are chary where thev
bestow their benefits. Their handsome
turn out on Wednesday evening proves
that they are ever ready to welcome an
artistic entertainment of decided merit.

A few evenings ago we heard a negro

“Hot biscuit and butter and honey-,

We admired his taste, but felt like punch

the cotton patch “hit white like snow.”

With (lowers alone we strew thy bed

Whose all of life, a rosy ray,
Blushed into dawn and passed away-.
Yes thou art fled; ere guilt had power
To stain thy cherub soul and form.

Thou wert so like a form of light,

Ere yet the world could breathe one blight
O’er thy sweet innocence;
And thou that brighter home to bless,
Art passed, with all thy loveliness.

Oh hadst thou still on earth remained,
Vision of beauty, fair as brief;
How soon thy brightness had been stained
With passion, or with grief;
Sow not a sullying breath can rise
To dim thy glory in the skies.
We rear no marble for thy tomb.
No sculptured image there shall mourn;
Ah! fitter far the vernal bloom
Such dwelling to adorn.
Fragrance, and flowers, and dews must be
The only emblems meet for thee.

Adorned with nature's brightest wreath ;

And bear from thine own home of rest
Some balm for human woes:
