Farm and Household.
Tho farms of tho United Staff's are. It is
said worth $10,196,000,000.
Ground bone is gradually .
value as a fertilizer, especially
ed with other and home fertilizers.
Hickory and cherry require a growth of
thirty years before they are valuable for
timber, tnapie twenty years and beeches
fifteen years.
Itissupposed that tiio farmers of Put
nam county will pay out in money or its
equivalent for meal for tho present year
about $.10,000. For corn, not less than thir
ty carloads, nggrfgating 15,000 bushels,
about $15,000 summing up $G5,roo.
Few farmers now make the mistake of
piling manure for apple trees around the
trunks. This is about as sensible as it
would tie to place rood for a man around
his feet rather than pitting it into his
mouth. The feeding roots of trees, which
are their mouths, «re at least as far from
the trunk as the top of the tree would be if
it were blown down. In bearing orchards
the roots meet, and more mouths would
Iw; fed by spreading the manure in the cen
ter, between the rows.
TLe following remedy Is recommended
for a horse having scratches: Place his
fee tar.d legs in bran poultices for thirty-six
honrs, tlien wash clean with warm water
and casiic soup, ami when dry rub the pits
or his heels witli the following: Take Gou
lard’s extract and olive oil, equal parts,
mixed. Do not .allow them to get wet af
ter the first washing, but keep them clean
by rubbing well with a wet cloth. Give
the following powders night and morning
in his feed. Take nitrate of potash, live;
pulverized resin, one. ounce
to twelve powders. Give r
ercisc.
A Substitute fob (Jnovi.it.—Wtiat can
be substituted for clover when it fails
through theoperation of insects? was the
question for discussion at a recent meet
ing of a western New York farmer’s e!ut.
Mr. Rogers venlured the opinion that it
: might be well to sow a mixture of grasses
| with tin: eiovi r so that there would be a
-sorting iLs | good seeding should t he clover fail. He
wnen mix- j did not believe that alsike will quite ill! its
place. Mr. Reed sowed a field with alsike
last year and it made good growth. He
suggested that when the ciover fails Hun
garian grass can be sowed In time to
make good the supply of winter fodder.
Mr. Quinby told of a neighboring farmer
who had grown alsike two seasons and
was very much pleased with it, the yield
being one ton and a half per season. Mr.
Reynolds did not think that alsike could
be a complete substitute for red clover; it
lacked the long tap roots, and could not
be cut so many times in a season, but for
the main cutting it would probably turn
out as much hay of equal quality. A
great many farmers a year ago sowed ai-
sikp, and so far as ho had learned were
weli pleased with results.
The subject of Hungarian grass being
again alluded to, Mr. Quinby recommend
ed it to make good any deficiency. He
said: “Where the soil is fertile and well
adapted to it, it will make an enormous
growtti, yielding live to seven tons per
acre. Stock will cat it; when well cured,
cattle will eat it as well as any other hay.
But few farmers who have given it a fair
trial have ever abandoned it.” The presi
dent or the society had tried Hungarian
grass, and found it of great value.
Mr. Reynolds in reply to a question
about blue grass said: “I have cut the
same piece nine or ten successive years,
and the last year the yield was equal to
the best. It does not grow tall, but on fa
vorable soil will grow very thick, with a
mass of leaves, and turn off a heavy bur
den. Does best on a heavy, moist, lime
stone soil.” Mr. Reed had scon a very
thick growth of blue grass that would cut
a good crop on fresh land.

gras os in order to obtain the most nour
ishment and largest relatively profitable
crops, and for tin' following reasons: The
amount of wati i lias diminished, and the
shrinkage will therefore im less. The
weight of the crop will lie largest in pro
portion to the nutritive value of its con
stituents. The amount o.” nitrogen not
pr-sent as albuminoids will be at its low
est point; fibre will not be so excessive as
to prevent digestion, and the nutritive
ratio will be more a Ivantageous. If cut
earlier the shrinkage is larger, although
the fibre Is less and albumen a little lar
ger. The palatahillty may Ik' increased,
but the total mil rimeiiU to the aero will
not be so huge, and the nutritive ratio
will be more abnormal. 1 he disadvantages
of late cutting m e evident in the increase
of tie* fibre, destroying the dige-t ibility of
the nuti iinonts and the falling off of the
albumen by conversion into amides, 'l ids
1b not made up by the larger crop cut.”
The fact is noticed by many farmers
that clover, aft* r winter grain, endures
the ensuing winter much better than ttiat
sown wiiii spring bat ley or oats. For one
reason the clover seed is usually sown
earlier on winter grain, and is therefore
generally si ronger in the fall. Yet where
this Is not tiie case the superiority of clo
ver sown on winter wheat or rye is very
obvious the following spring, especially it
the winter lie favorable for heaving roots
out of the soil. It is probable that the
different mechanical condition of the sur
face will explain these results. The
ground that lias not been plowed for
twelvemonth inis had its surface mor
compacted by heavy rains, whilo that
plowed the previus spring is porous, and
holds much more water. Heavy rollin,
of the surface of spring-sown grain after
seeding will, pet haps, remedy 7 this evil in
purt. If tlie surface, in the fall continues
very open the roller may again be used
with advantage to make the soil less re
ceptivo of water. Clover, witli oats, is
more likely’ to lie water-killed than after
barley, and the peculiarly ilulTy or spon
gy surface left by a good oat crop, on land
abounding in vegetable matter, is the
cause.
Giif.n Pea Sour.— One can of green peas
warmed and rubbed through a puree strain
er. When nearly all rubbed through pour
a pint of hot milk slowly’ through the
strainer to wash oil every part of the pulp.
You will be surprised to see the amount of
coarse hulls left on the strainer. Put the
pulp and milk on to boil, and add more
milk, or cream if you have it, until you
have the proper consistency, which will
tie about like cream ; when holing thicken
with one tablespoonful of butter and one
half a tablespoonful of Hour worked to
gether. Add one teaspoonful of salt, one
scant teaspoonfui of sugar and a dash of
white pepper. Serve with croutons or
with buttered crackers which have been
browned in the oven. This is a delicious
summer soup, and can bo made in ten
minutes at any time. A can of peas costs
10 cents. The same soup may be mad
with fresh peas, which are too hard or too
old to serve as a vegetable, although it
will take somewhat longer to prepare it.
But this is the best use to make of the old
peas, as the tough hull, which is the indi
gestible part, is removed by the straining.
Boil the peas until tender, mash and sift
them, then proceed as with the canned
peas. Hard, fresh peas may be used as a
vegetable by mashing and sifting, adding
cream, butter and seasoning, and serving
a9 you would mashed squash. Many per
sons think tliis a very palatable dish. It
Is certainly more healthful than it is to at
tempt to eat the peas withont sifting.
Be sure and not forget to add a little sugar
to peas, as they are naturally sweet, and
lose their sweetness by boiling.
The following items we clipped from the
Courier Journal:
Where pigs are kept in pens it is remark
able how greedily they will take to eating
charcoal. When they can reach the open
ground it is less essential.
The man who keeps an ox or a cow un
til it pines with old age is a double loser
by so doing. It invariably costs more in
food and care than a young oqe.
It is absolutely essential to success in
onion culture that the ground should be
rich. Almost any soil can be made to
raise good onions if it is thoroughly drain
ed and fertilized.
A crop of millet or Hungarian grass may
be sown for hay after it is found that the
grass crop is likely to be a failure. These
are hot weather crops and succeed best
when grass is a failure.
A little oatmeal in water makes an ex
cellent drink for horses. It is nourishing,
and if convenient, half a palofui should be
given each Jiorsc in tiie middle of the fore-
Doon and afternoon. It will enable the
horse to endure work much better.
The farmer who has a neat, well-kept
garden is almost sure to have a neat and
well-kept farm, a comfortable and well-
appointed home, tidy out-buiidiugs and
stock in good condition: and the house
wife who takes pride in the garden gener
ally has a home to take pride in and to be
proud of.
Chickens when first hatched should not
be hurried out of the sitting nest. For
twenty-four hours at least from the time
the earliest commenco to show themselves
It Is better to leave them under cr with
the hen mother. They need no food from
a day to a day and a half usually. When
they get strong enough to venture from
beneath their mother's wings it is lime to
move the brood.
The low price of wool is causing more
attention to be given to mutton sheep.
One difficulty is that we have not enough
re illy mutton to create a demand. In
England more is thought of mutton than
of beef, and for the very best mutton
pilot■ are paid that would make American
farmers stare. The line-wooled sheep
have received most attention front our
breeders, and their mutton is not the best.

WHY?
Because, if yon so desire, the instrument
will be sent yon on trial. You cau then see if it
is as represented, before a dollar is paid. Is; this
not fair: 'VIto lias the advantage upon these
conditions? You or tiie Georgia Music House.
a®-Because, we are where you cau reach ns,
and should we misrepresent au instrument you
could do us an irreparable damage by giving us a
bad advertisement. A reputation for square
and honorable dealing, for many yenrs in the
South is too valuable to us, not to receive our
carerul protection, for herein is the key of our
success.
Because a friend made is a customer gain
ed. 'Ve are determined to make nothing but
friends, so any representation by ns you can put
down as a Solid Fact, and govern yourself ac
cordingly.
<#-Becuuse, we will pay freight both ways if
the instrument is not as represented and il satis
factory we pay freight to your home—any where
in the South, Has any other house made a more
liberal offer than this?
In Conclusion,
We keep an immense supply of Mnsic Books,
Sheet Music and Music Supplies generally.
