High Life in New York.
The following litttje episode in fashiona
ble life in New York may be ihtefesting to
our readers. We give both sides of the story,
, Our first extract is from the New York World
of the 2d inst., as follows:
The retail store of A. T. Stewart & Co.,
comer of Broadway aud Tenth street, was
the scene of a row yesterday between two la
dies. [So in the World.] From the facts
elicited it appeara that Mrs. Frank B. Spin'ola,.
wife of General Spinola, encountered a fiish-
ionabiy-dressed female’ on one of the stair
ways, as. she was going down, named Maiy.
Gill, residing at No. 136 West Sixteenth street,
who tauntingly said to her in the presence of ■

Mary, ns alleged, attempting to spit in her
(Mrs. Spinola’s) lace, and using other taunt
ing language. Mrs. Spinola raised her par
asol and dealt Mary' several blows on or
about her head, which caused her to cry for
help. Officer Corkey, who is detailed at. the
store, hearing the disturbance, proceeded to
the spot, and upon complaint of Alary Gill, ar
rested Airs'. Spinola, and took her before
Justice Dodge, at Jefferson Market, where a
complaint.was token against her. She,gavp
bail in the sum of $300 to answer at the spe
cial sessions. . : .:i-(

A Letter, from Tltaddcio Stevens.
The following letter was made public the
first time on Wednesday night:
Washixgton, June 27, 1868.
Desi-Siral regret I-cannotppeak iayorably
of. the Chicago platform. It is like most of
the Republican-platforms for the past six
years—lame and cowardly. For twenty years
before the .war vthe North, belmvpd. like pol
troons in all their legislative controversies
with slavery. They have much more physi
cal than moral courage. Had it not been for
a few determined-men ftf ’ 186# the '"Union

publicans have, as I. . said, : great , physi
cal courage, and when driven ’ to the
test will always conquer. They are just
os .timid now. as they were belorq the
war;-'tor trade .-might suffer, • What' 4m ttic
bold men at Chicago gain by selling the
right of suffrage? They tell me that the
loyal blacks ot the South earned it by the
aid they gave us; but that when they have
not made that pnrchase'the right of • suffrage
remains at the pleasure of'the States. Now,
the Republican party- knows that the Deelava-
tion of Independence contains no such lolly
—no such wickedness. I treat every man as a
man, and the right of Universal .suffrage as an
inalienable right long suspended from neglect,
and now, for the first time since forming of the

perishable right of the elective franchise.—
Why ’not traffic'of self their life,’liberty, and
souls? This doctrine reduces all men to
successful it will be. There is one consola
tion. The Democrats can’t find as good enn-
• didates; but,' from constant and long prac
tice, will make a much more villainous, plat
form. It is vain for the Republican party to
hope to maintain their liberty by skulking.
Let them be bold and honest, and they will
learn that “Heaven still rules.” Let them
be cowardly and mean, and they will receive
their reward witbtbn “hewers of .wood and
drawers of water.
