F. & M. Hamilton of this city, met with a serious and well-nigh fatal accident in New York city, about a week ago. He was crossing the East river 5b one of the Fulton Ferry boats, and os the steamer neared the dock, he pushed forward among the crowd which waited in readiness to spring to land. When the boat was still some feet from the dock, persons on board commenced, to jump off, and Mr. Hamilton tried., to do the same; but, instead of reaching tMv plat form ou the wharf he fell short. As he was falling the boat came up and caught and jammed him np against the timbers of the dock. He threw up one of his arms, and as he did so, the hook used for holding the boat. in place was being pulled up, and at caught ' on his side tearing a large piece of flesh loose, just below the arm. It happened very fortunately for Mr. Ham ilton that scarcely any time elapsed after he fell before it was known by the Pilot, and the Engineer signalled to back; and he was re lieved- from his painfol a position. . Had. the wheels revolved forward once more he wonld assuredly have been crashed to death. Mr. Hamilton was carried to a hotel close by and a surgeon called to his assistance. The wound in his side, made by the hook, had to be sewed up, and he suffered greatly from in ternal injuries. When last heard from he was improving as fast as could be 'expected. Cotot or Ordinary—An Alleged Gase or Lunacy.— A session of thejCourt of Ordinary was held ou Saturday morning, for the Ordi nary,' Henry S.' Wetmore, Esq.’, tC Liar ifin- taatimony relative to the alleged lunacy of J. C. Hibbard. The latter was before the Police Court on Tuesday, for being intoxicated, was fined, and being unable to pay the fine, was committed to the Police Barracks. The some day a petition was filed with the Ordinary, alleging him to be a lnnatic, and asking that he be sent to some place where he could be kept in confinement. When the case came up it was promptly dismissed, there being no evidence of lunacy. The principal witness said he thought Hibbard was crazy because be would not comb- liis hair. The. accused questioned the witnesses very sharply, and eshibited a degree of sanity which perfectly satisfied the Court. m Heavy Gale.—On Saturday night a heavy gale of wind sprung np, and the atmosphere, which, during the day had beon quite warm, changed and became considerably on the cold order. The wind whistled and rattled through the city, slammed window shutters and doors, made signs creak, and moaned dismally in chimneys. It was on a regular frolic, and attempted to weigh her anchor and come up to the city, but the gale was too heavy for her to do so. Yesterday morning it was still blowing so hard that- it woS with difficulty that a pilot was put on board of her. The Ay-poaching Election.—We -learn that the Ordinary, Mr. Wetmore, who is charged wth providing ways and means for. the Presi dential election to he held in this county, rill have the polls so arranged as to keep city md county voters separate, and also to keep the different‘races apart,' no as to avoid all chance of any difficulty occurring at the polls. ■There will be different so that all ma; crowding and commendable act, artS we iiope it may prove successful in its object^—to secure peace’ and ?uiet at the election. :: ; T.. -i-rip- The polls will opien at six o'clock in' the morning, and will be closed at six o’clock in the evening. Insurance dates back into ancient times, id - the system has,’ during the course -of years been perfected, and now, works beauti fully in all its arrangements. People have confidence in, and will not do without it. The feeling with which it is regarded was very, i aptly illustrated by the old story of the Irish guest at a New York hotel, whom the waiter. was leading up to a room near the root Af ter ascending flight after flight of steps, he became alarmed, and inquired of the atten- lead on to the moon .'f .the concern goes that high.” While Insurance does not altogether pro vide against the occurrence of fires, as Pat’s idea of it would suggest, it lias done much even in that way, for it is certainly to the in terest of the companies to have as few of them as possible; and to this end they have always been forward in perfecting the fire- departments of cities, and in aiding in the introduction ,of steam engines for the extin guishment' of ^conflagrations. So that they have worked great good-jirpvery way. Mr. A. McNulty, a well' known, energetic , and courteous business man of-qur city has succeeded to the Five'ahd Marine Insurance business,, so long and successfully carried on by Aaron Wilbur, Esq. The companies that he represents stand A No. 1, and all losses in curred are sure to be paid promptly. He is prepared to take cotton, merchandise; marine, river and building risks, at as low fates as can be obtained elsewhere. The attention of those interested is particularly invited to the item of marine insurance. His office is at No. 89 Bay street, between Abercom and Sffi’tsas^sasMSL'Sas: Stab Engagement of Fadladeen.—We un derstand that Eadladeeri, the Prince of Crit ics, has effected a star ..engagement with the BepidSican to criticise the local columns of the Mobning News. -The old fellow is cap tions, carping and critical as in days of: yore, and.those who have read “Lalla Bookh,” and who peruse the ’Publican’s local, will recognize the ancient Dogberry’s presence at once. He is equally as severe upon us, as he was regarding Feramorz, and exhibits his own fool ish conceit and know-nothingness to equally as good advantage. Old Fad has not been heard ot for some time, and the admirers, of Moore’s celebrated poem, will be glad, to learn that a character which furnished them so much amusement, -has been engaged to enli ven (save the markj the ’Publican’s local. Policeman Yeagar’s at tention was attracted, and he went np to the party, who treated him to a cursing.- Dow ling and Lee were each fined six dollars and costs, and Hogan four dollars. One of the policemen on duty at the Bar racks was up for neglect of duty, 'in allowing a prisoner to escape from the yard A fine of ten dollars was imposed by His Honor, which- he promised to remit, in case ’ the officer in question should recapture the prisoner. - Policeman Yeager was arraigned for being found 'asleep while on duty, in Congress street lane. Lieutenant Howard-testified that he was making the rounds, and came across Yeager, who was _ lying down on the ground and fast asleep. Accused said that he had been dn duty all night, and had been unable to obtain any rest the next day, and when he went out again at> night he was too tired to keep np. He was ordered to' pay a fine of ten dollars and to be dropped from the rolls. A Dangerous Animal.—For some months past two cows have been taken .oat Barnard street, every morning, to pasture on the com mons, and brought back at night. One of them was very wild, and the person in charge of the pair always led her by a rope, attached to her horns. This slight check did not, prevent her from making occasional raids upon the sidewalk, when the humor seized her; and, one day, while she' Wps. beifgled by a square in which some children were playing croquet, she broke loose, rushed to wards the little ones, and in attempting to get out of her way some of them were injur ed. Very fortunately for the children, the attention of the animal was attracted by a young cedar tree, which, in her blind rage, she utterly demolished. lYithinthepast.week j the cow has been taken along the same street every day without any check whatever. -Ono evening, while on her way home, she rnshed np on the sidewalk, where many ladies and children were walking, and caused them to scatter in every direction. The animal is really dangerous, and as the law provides for the arrest of drunken and unruly men, who cause, ile, we- is, and compel the owners of this cow either to keep -her out of the thoroughfares of the city, or cut her up into beef or mince-meat, before she injures some person. Sailing op Steamers.—The San Salvador, Capt. The Tonawnnda, Capt: Jennings, sailed for Philadelphia at the same hour, on Saturday. She took 749 bales of upland cotton and a large freight of assorted merchandise. Her passenger list was also qnite full The Montgomery, ^apt. Lyon, sailed for New York yesterday. She had her comple ment of passengers and was fall of freight, among which were nine hundred bales of up land cotton. Carpeting, Gent’s Fubnlsuino Goods, Ac. —In another column Mr. Thomas Pepper, proprietor of one of the finest dry goods stores, on Congress street, invites the. attend tioh of the public to a large and-varied stock of carpets and window shades, which he has now on hand. Those in want of such goods will be sure to find something to please’them among the many patterns and kinds which he offers for Bale at very low rates. quality, which can be obtained at his store at prices which are astonishingly cheap.
