Franklin was ilso captured, and the two were brought be fore the Mayor yesterday, They were turned over to the City Court, and at its session in the afternoon, Franklin plead guilty to being the party who caused the cotton to be tuken, and was sent to jail for sixty days. Houston was acquitted and discharged, as there was a doubt about whether he knew that the cot ton did not belong to Franklin or not. Cotton Presses in the Interior Cities.-— Major Norman C. Jones, the owner of the new cotton preBS recently erected on Dillon’s wharf, is also about to put up presses in Haeon, Augusta, Columbus, and other place! The Macon Telegraph speaks very dis- ' the project, and takes the cotton presses are. useful in n **r couragingly of the project, and new that while cotton pret seaboard cities, and can be made profitable, in inland towns they will not pay. If it was possible to realize anything by having cotton compressed in the interior, the argues that the Central and other _ road corporations would have bad presses in operation long ago. But, it declares, while it is au advantage to the owners of a vessel to have the cotton compressed, so that a greater number of bales can be carried, it is of no benefit to a railroad company whose facilities for the quick transportation of the staple>re so great. Cleared the Wrecks.—It has always Been the custom of the steamers plying to and from this port, to go ont at high water, on account of the fear of getting “stuck" at the ’‘wreaks;*'' bnt on Sunday afternoon, the steamer Her man Livingston, heavily loaded, and drawing thirteen feet of water, came up the river ana passed through the channel at the obstmd- tions at dead low tide; and thus arrived up to her wharf some hours earlier than would have been the case had she waited for the tide to rise. The channel above alluded to to have been well the Livingston a man dredged, and the in skilled in bis city and Liverpool than we 1 do of the regular nave announced. long ago that the attempt will fail.
