S|mnUh Beauty.
I had heard very much of tho beanty of
Spanish women, but indeed the half of tho
truth was notand cannot be told. Sometimes,
heretofore, when standing half entranced
before Murillo’s pictures, I. have wonder
ed whence came his ideal or inspiration; but
his Madonnas and Magdalens only walk the
streets of Madrid and other cities of Spain.
He had but to paint the portraits of his
friends. Often have I stopped in ntter aston
ishment at such ravishing beauty. The fea
tures, tho form, tho movement, the expression
are Roman dignity combined with Moorish
grace; the stateliness of Zenobia with the
voluptuousness of Cleopatra. Can it be that
such summer evening twilight of repose can
ever give place to the dark, stormy night of
demoniac passion ? That vice, treachery,
falsehood, lurk under that angelic, exterior?
The statue of the Venus do Milo , in the
Louvre, at Paris, and the statue of the Venus
de Medici in the Tribune, at Florence, have
divided the admiration of the world. They
represent two types of womanhood, differing
as night and day; the former strong, sensu
ous, affectional, devotional, and faithful
friend, the constant wife, the devoted mother;
the latter impulsive.
The first typifies the English woman, the
last the French. A combination of the two
constitutes the perfection of womanhood, as
found in the Spanish Senora. She is evi
dently the result of many generations of the
finest culture. The climate, the scenery, the
romance, the chivalry, the grand and stirring
scenes of Spanish history, have perfectly ma
tured and developed the Roman and Moorish
blood that flows in her veins, finer than poet
or painter ever conceived. The brilliant
dark eyes and raven hair, coral lips, pearly
teeth, the delicate complexion, the delicate
shading, and penciling of her eyelash and
brow, the shapely features, the expression of
affection and warmth, the repose and dignity
blended in her expression, the grace of man
ner, uro indescribable. Her flowing dress,
mantilla, veil, and the fan, set off her bean-
ties of person, and her ease of movement
seems without effort, and more like gliding
than walking. She is not seemingly offended
or affected by the extravagant flattery or com
pliment paid her, but accepts it in apparent
innocent unconsciousness of its being any
thing improper any more than if it had been
addressed to the lily, the rose, a picture, or
any work of art. If she be artful, sbe pos
sesses the higher art of concealing it.—Oar.

Fatal Affray.—A difficulty occurred in
Preston, Georgia, about one o'clock, on Mon
day last, between Mr. John S. Eilands und
Mr. James O. Wooley, in which the former
was stabbed by the latter, in the left breast
near the heart. Mr. Eilands died at four p.
m., from the effects of the wound. Mr.
Wooley was taken in hand by the Sheriff,
•who happened to b& on the ground when the
act was eommited, and is now confined in
jail to await his trial.

OFFICE OF THE MORNING NEWS, )
- * d.f
Savannah, October 23, 6 P. M.
Cotton.—The market to-day was quite active with
good inquiry and a few foreign buyers looking around.
The noon dispatches from New York announcing the
advance in that market caused our market to become
much stiffen The market closed quite firm with mid
dling at 23%c. The following were the sales to-day:
4 at 24, 20 at 23%, 78 at 23%, 7 at 23%, 184 at 23, 36 at
22%, 145 at 22%, 136 at 22, 72 at 21%, and 10 at 19 cts.
Total, 098 bales.
Sea Islands—Nothing of importance done in this
line to-day. The sales were: 1 at 70, 7 at 65c. Total,
8 bags.
The receipts to-day were 1320 bales.
Gold—Buying $1 35@1 30; selling at $1 38@1 39.
Rice.—New rice is coming in very slowly. The re
ceipts this week amount to 9,099 bushels. Very little
doing for want of stock; hardly quotable; market ir
regular.
Bacon.—The market remains steady but not active.
We quote shoulders at 14%(&15%c, rib sides at 17fe>
I7^c, and clear ribbed at 18<g}18%c. There are few
clear sides offeriug.and prices are nominal at I8(©I8i a c.

Provisions.—Western meats have advanced in New
York, but our market is not affected by it, owing
doubtless to the large stock on hand. Shoulders, 15fo)

by steam through to Boston, l%c ^ lb. With quite a
number of arrivals, there is no diminution in freight
offerings; about ail vessels reaching here having been
placed North. Rice is beginningeto' offer and soon
cotton freights can be had. We see no reason to look
for a decliue iu lumber aud timber freights, but with
the large quantity offering and few vessels on the way
unchartered, an advance would seem more likely.
