For the Bad. Electoral Ticket... 394 1,922 2.316

These figures show a Democratic gain in
the city of 1,959 on the vote of last spring,
while the Democratic vote of the county (ex

as theu.
These figures show glory enough for one
day. Old Chatham is redeemed; the carpet

this section of the country. We can afford
to rejoice. •*
The Plans of the Georgia Historical
Society.—The Georgia Historical Society ap
pears to be the organization around which
all hopes of increasing the literary tastes of
our people, and furnishing healthy recrea
tion for the young men and women of the
city, must centre. From a comparatively
small body of gentlemen, interested in scien
tific subjects, and contenting themselves
with the collection of documents relating to
the early history of Georgia, it haB increased
in numbers and importance, until at the
present time the hall erected on Bryan street
has become too small for its purposes. The ’
society has either to remove to other quar
ters or to build a larger hall on the vacant
lot in the rear of their present edifice.
The lot upon which the.building on Bryan
street sta.nds, was formerly occupied by the
old United States Custom House, and was pur
chased from the government for fifteen hun
dred dollars; and the Society’s hull was built
on- the foundation walls of the ojfi Custom
House. A large lot was left vacant iu the rear
of the building, so that it could be enlarged
and extended, if iu future years it should be
come necessary. Iu erecting their hall the
Society fell Bhort of.the necessary-funds,’add
lacked about one thousand dollars to com
plete the work. This was raised oq tfie per
sonal notes of Hon. Solomon Cohen and Mr.
John Stoddard. When these notes fell due
they were taken up'by Dr.' John Screven;
and when the time came round - that the
money was to be refunded to him, he made
the Society a present of it. The building is
two stories high, the lower floor being occu
pied by the Freedmen’s Savings Bank. The
upper ■ rooms are used by the Society as a
place of meeting and as a library. Their
collection of book? comprises some valuable
works, and is being increased as fust as the
funds will permit! It forma the nucleus of
what we hope one day will grow to be a pub
lic library commensurate with the wants of
the city. .. 5
Several plans of extending the building to
cover the lot in the rear are proposed, any
one of which would answer the purp.gss. 'J’be
best and most payiqg plan appears to be to
excavate cellars, and so arrange the lower
