SAVANNAH MARKET.
OFFICE OF THE MORNING NEWS, 1
Savannah, November 10, 6 P. M. j
Cotton.—The morning opened quiet, with a light
inquiry. Several foreign buyers were in the market,
but they could not meet the views of holders. The
decline in New York caused an irregular market at the
close. We quote middling at 23@23>£c.
The following are the sides of the day: 17 bales at
23y 2 c, 3 at 23AL 209 at 23, 40 at 22*. 80 at 22>£, 27 at
22)£, 11 at 22, 4 at 21,1 at 18—total, 392 bales.
The receipts amount to 2,915 bales.
Gold—Buying at 134; selling at 137>£. Silver 10
«. ?cent, lew.^ > > 'A'&i', j-.t I
Exchange.—New York eight buying »t %c. off; sell
ing at off Boston >^c. less. Philadelphia Sc.
Sterling bills in demand at 144^c.; HanVa are check
ing in amounts at tfc. off. ^
- Floitb.—The stock on the znarket is large, and the
demand light, but increasing. The feeling in
Northern brands a little better. We quote Northern
superfine, $7 00@9; extra, $9 00@11, and family and
fancy, $12@12 50. Good Georgia and Tennessee brands
are in fair demand at $10 50@11 for superfine, $12 50
- @13 50 for extra, and $13 50@14 00 for family and
fancy.
Grain.—The stock of Georgia and Tennessee old
com is small and demand light. New com is coming
in very slowly, and in small lots. We quote from
depot 0O@$1 05; from store at $1 15@1 20; old com
$1 15@1 20. Oats have not advanced since our last
~ report. We quote frdln depot at 90@95c in large
lots ; from store at 95@$1 00.
Bacon.—The market is much weaker and not active.
We quotejshoulders at 14)£@15J£c, rib sides at 17@
I7^c, and clear ribbed at 17i£@18^c. There are few
. clear.aidesoffering, and prices are nominal at 18@18 3^ c.
^ Hams, 23c. Breakfast bacon is quiet at l$4$20c. Dry
salted meats are in better demand. We quote should
ers at 13@13#c; clear sides, 17^@17i£c; short ribb
ed, 16@16&c; bellies, 17@r7&c, and Stratford cut at
16c.
~ Rice.—New rice is coinfrg in more freely. The re
ceipts this week amount to 5,756 bushels. Very little
doing for want of stock; hardly quotable; znarket is
improving. Some sales have been made at 8
First quality of rice would bring more.
Bali.—The demand limited—stock very good. From
wharf $1 60; stare, $1 70.
Fkeights.—Foreign quiet. By sail to Liverpool 7-16
: on uplands. Timber nominal, offering at 36 shil
lings for hewn for Liverpool, 38 shillings to Queens
town for orders. Coastwise: To New 7ork, % of a
cent fij on uplands; domestics, $1 00 ^ bale; rice,
$2 t 50. By steam to Philadelphia, &c 3* ft on uplands;
domestics, 75. To Baltimore by steam* ; by sail, nom-
- Inal; by steam toliverpool % of a cent ^ j£b on sot-
ton; to Havre 1 cent gold ^4 ft on cotton. Cotton
by steam through to Boston, l*c %4 ft, .With quite a
number of arrivals, there is no dixninuition in freight
offerings^ about all vessels reaching here having been
placed North. Rice is beginning to offer and soon
cotton freights can be had. We see no reason to look
for a decline in lumber and timber freights, but with
the large quantity offering And few vessels on the way
'» unchartered, an advance would seem more likely.
We have to report a dullness in coastwise and Cuban
freights, due to scarcity of vessels. Plenty of lumber
and timber awaiting shipment, and any vessel arriving
unchartered, will 1 be readily placed at good rates.
Dumber offering for several United States ports at
$11@13 00 gold. To Baltimore, boards, $9 00; re
sawed, $9 50. Resawed and timber to New York,
