Southern Production. —Notwithstanding
the many discouragements which the South has
had to encounter since the close of the rebellion,
such as the unsettled state of social, industrial
and political affairs, lack of ready means'and
low state of credit, it is gratifying to note the
substantial progress, which that section has
made, and is making, towards a reparation of
the losses aud wastes of war. The Southern
States have notonlybeeome nearly, or quite,

legitimate position in the commerce and indus
try of the country. The South is peculiary fa
vored as regards soil and climate, wbich are
adapted not only to a very large production of
the recognized staples of that section, but to
most of the cereals, frnits and root crops of the
higher latitudes. This has been abundantly de
monstrated in the last year or two, daring which
the Northern markets have been liberally sup
plied with a great variety of farm and garden
produce, which has yielded even better returns
to the producers than cotton. Manufactures have
also made some progress, but nothing like the
headway which this branch of industry is des
tined to make in succeeding years, when a com
plete pacification shall bring into requisition
the necessary auxiliary .forces of capital and
labor. In addition to a fine soil and diversi
fied climate, the South possesses untold wealth
in her mines of iron, lead, copper and sulphur,
not to speak of the more precious metals, which
will, withont doubt, be placed under tribute by
unfailing energies, as soon as the present anom
alous condition of social affairs shall give
place to law, order and general stability, it is
altogether probable that tbe healing art of time
will overcome the animosities engendered by
tbe war, and thus permit, in succeding years
unexampled progress of material prosperity.—

For Liverpool,
One morning as I walked abroad
I met an aged man.
With feeble voice he faintly said
“Oh, help me if you can.”
** T’was very bleak and cold that day,
And he was thinly clad;
His form was bent his face was pale,
His countenance was sad.
I gazed upon that poor old man—
“Why do you beg?” said I;
“Have you no friends to care for you,
That can your wants supply r*
“Alas,” said he, “none tgive I now;
My children all are gone;
God called them h6me some years ago
And I am left alone.
“Their mother Bleeps beside them too.
In the church-yard far away;*'
And I am weary of this life
I'd gladly die to-day.
“A poor old widow livea’* said he,
“Just rofmd the comer there;
She gives me shelter for my head,
But bread she cannot spare.
“For she is old and feeble too.
With three grand-children small;
And very hard she finds it now
To get enough for an.*'
Just then a nnn comes by,
All clad in garments warm;
The old man asked for aid, but, oh l
He seemed to give alarm:
For with a shrug the man passed on;
His ftce he tried to hide—
And when he made two steps before
Now surely made one stride.
A little girl was standing by.
With light and curly hair;
Said she, “this quarter my mama
Gave to me for the fkir.
“But I would rather stay at home
And give it sir to you;
My mama will not be vex'd
Oh take it sir—please do.**
I know not if that, old man livea—
I never saw him more;
I can but hope and trust that all
His sufferings now are o’er.
And often do I think ofthat
Fair child with curly hair,
• And wish for her a pathway strewn
With bl6oings rich and rare.
