Knickerbocker Lira Insurance Company,
which, in justice to that beneficent and
popular institution we feel constrained to
make, known, * ; y ,- S 1
The late editor and proprietor of this jour
nal, whose death it was our painful duty to
record only a few weekd'sific“ bad some two
>years ago providently taken a small life
policy, in the Knickerbocker Company. Not
so careful in sneh matters as the holders of
policies should be he hdd neglected to pay
tbe manual premium. In rapidly failing health
be hoped by a short visit North, by travel,
relaxation and a change of climate, to better bis
condition, deferring matters of business until
his return. But alas his hope was disap
pointed. Death claimed him iu the home
of his childhood. The widow oh her return to
this city to Took after his affairs, found that the
life policy had expired by non-payment of the
premium- . ' " i —
It was a sad disappointment coming in a
time of' sore bereavement. The cose was
brought to the notice of Col. Aaron Wilbur,
the local manager ofthe' KnickerbockerCom-
pany ih Savannah. The legal obligation sbf-;
the Company had ceased to exist—the policy,
in the regular course, had been cancelled.
But there were circumstances in the case
which entitled it to special consideration. .
The deceased had been a friend to the Com- 1
jpany and an able advocate of tbe general
policy of Life Insnranoe, and to his pen-hoth
the Insurance Companies and the public had
been largely, indebted for. the benefits which
are daily resulting from Life Insurance. It
was well known too that the benefit which he
had sought for 1 his family hod been forfeit
ed only by neglect. Tbe matter being
entirely committed to Col Wilbur, that
gentlexqan/^ with his characteristic liberality,
presented the widow of our deceased friend, a
check upon the President of the Knicker
bocker Life Insnranoe Company for one thou-:
sand ($1,000) dollars, thus satisfying the
policy. :—'—. ---
In this case there was no legal -claim upon
the company, and. the policy being of recent
date even the equity of the case could hot
have been successfully urged. Tbe action of
Colonel ."Wilbur, therefore, in thus ratifying
and perfecting the good intentions *of the
deceased is all the more -praiseworthy,
and commends the company to the favor of
the public, .but especially of;.the fraternity
whose good offices he has so handsomelyhc-

Quincy, Fla., November 11, 1868.
The dwelling house of Mr. N. D. Zeigler, a
prominent and highly -esteemhd citizen of
this county, some three miles north of
Quincy was entirely, destroyed by fire on
last night, November 9th. The fire com
municated from the kitchen and was sup
posed to be the result of carelessness, or
mischarge. His loss, including one year's sup
ply of provisions, will amount to about fonr
thousand dollars. The people of this county
are pretty generally engaged in making up
their sngar cane, or preparing for it, at this
time, which is rather early in the year, but
their cane is being stolen so rapidly and in
sneh. quantities by the many idle negroes,
that they are : driven to the alternative of
■making it np or losing it.
Universal Suffrage.—It is stated that on
the first day of the next session Congress
