The pretext is profoundly and palpably ridiculous. The character of the legislation intended may be gathered from the following excerpt from the same sheet; it is evidently additional pains and penalties : ‘•Let Democratic violence in the South go unchecked and unpunished, and at the next election the rebel ruffians of New Orleans and Georgia will have made their example so' con tagious that not a Union citizen can live, much less vote, in the South; and, let Demo cratic fraud in the North go unchecked and unpunished, and at the next election the re peaters and roughs of New York, city will not only carry New York State by their frauds, but will overflow, as.before, into Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and submerge ihn 1n»nl mninmtinc rvt* nil flinon Qfo f qq ** IN EQUITY—IN RICHMOND SUPERIOR AT CHAMBERS, AUGUST 27, lations dwindled— ’Till the thought that I'd been swindled made me feel inclined to swear. I referred yesterday to the suggestion of an eminent Radical, that a Na tional Constitutional Convention offered the swiftest, surest and only solution of onr diffi culties. Unexpectedly I find him supported by a very prominent gentleman on the other side. Hon, S. S.
