SAVANNAH MARKET.
OFFICE OF THE MORNING NEWS,)
Savannah. Friday, November 2T, 1848. f.
Cotton.—The market for the past week has been
comparatively steady, and the demand throughout
good—Wednesday unusually so—and all lines firm.
Low middling and upwards have been taken at quo
tations, and are still in good demand, at about 24c for
middling, while lower grades are still neglected, and
jnuch lower proportionately than at any time during
the season. Notwithstanding the various home and
foreign predictions of lower prices on account of large
crop, prices seem tending upward, and, the presump
tion is, will not be lower, as at this season prices here
tofore have been at their lowest point. Many com.
plaints are heard latterly of rejections of mixed cot
tons. Planters should be careful in preparing their
cotton for market, and the present system of selling
various grades of cotton, when belonging to one party,
at the same figure, we think ought to be abolished^
We give the following resume of the week:
Friday.—The market opened with a very good in
quiry, and the-demand better than we have had for
some time past, buyers seeming anxious to fill orders.
Sellers asked higher rates, under favorable advices
from the North and Liverpool. Middling quoted at
23c. Sales, 1,822 bales.
Saturday.—To-day there was considerable inquiry
displayed, and the demand was good, but holders and
buyers were still at variance. The 3 P. ML dispatch
from Liverpool gave holders renewed confidence that
-prices would be better. The market closed quiet, with
periling firm at 23c. Sales, 538 bales.
Monday.—The inquiry was general and the demand
good. Transactions large. The firmness of holders
caused buyers to operate cautiously, and to take only
such lots as were comparatively cheap. The market
closed buoyant under 3 P. M. advices from New York,
as follows: “Cotton firm and in fair demand/* Mid
dlings were quoted at 23£<&23Xc. Sales/1.575 bales.
Tuesday.—The market opened with considerable in
quiry. Liverpool showing a firm and advancing mar
ket, gave holders confidence. Our market closed firm
at 23>i@24c for middling, and 23@23)^c for low mid
dling; lower grades cheaper and much neglected.
Sales. 1.491 bales.
Wednesday.—The market opened with good inquiry,
and demand very fair. The operations ol the day were
the largest of the season. The inquiry was entirely
for good cottons. The dispatches from the North
and Liverpool affected our market very little.
New York showed a quiet, but steady market, with
sales of 4,000 bales; Liverpool, firm, and quotations
unchanged. Our market closed quiet, but firm, with
middling at 24c. Sales, 2,232 bales.
Thursday.—It being a day of thanks, business trans
actions were limited. We hear of but 100 bales being
sold, on a basis of 24c for middling—46 bales at 23?£c,
and about 40 bales at 24c.
Sea Island.—The demand for common and medium
grades has been good, with unchanged prices. In
finer grades, buyers and sellers cannot agree upon
prices. Some sales have been made on private terms.
The receipts at this port since the 19th instant
amount to 11,076 bales upland, of which 8,173 were re
ceived per Central Railroad, 2,500 per Atlantic and Gulf
Railroad, 289 from landings on the Savannah river,
i snctAfiflhanss from Florida. The exports for the same
time have been 7,266 bales upland and 220 bales sea
island, of which 3,175 bales upland and 15 bales sea
island were shipped to Havre, 3,298 bales upland and
205 bales sea island to New York, 249 bales upland to
Philadelphia, and. to Baltimore 554 bales.

The following poem; from the Church of England
Magazine, will come like a “song in the night*’ to
many a. stricken heart:
"The loved and lost!” why do we call them lost ?
Because we miss them from our onward road,
God’s unseen angel o’er our pathway crost,
Looked on us all, and loving them the most,
Straightway relieved them from life’s weary load.
They are not lost; they are within the door
That shuts out loss and every hurtftxl thing—
With angels bright, and loved ones gone before,
In their Redeemer's presence evermore,
And God himself their Lord, Judge, and King,
And this we call a loss I O selfish sorrow
Of selfish hearts! O we of little frith!
Let ns look round, some argument to borrow.
Why we in patience should await the morrow,
Sailed Thursday.

‘•Nay, but the woes I feel he too must share!”
Or, rather, bursting into grateful song,
She .went her way rejoicing, and'made strong
To struggle on, since be was freed from care.
We will do likewise. Death hath made no breach
In love and sympathy, in hope and trust;
No outward sigh or sound our ears can reach.
But there’s an inward, spiritual speech,

It bids os do the work that they laid down—
