OFFICE OF THE MORNING NEWS, l
Savannah, December 1,- 6 P. M. J
Ckxrrox.—The market opened with fair* inquiry,
and continued so throughout the entire day; advices
from New York and Liverpool strengthened our mar
ket so as to enable holders to get their asking prices
of yesterday—the lower grades still'much neglected.
The scarcity of the better grades in our market, at
present, is owing to our largest houses purchasing in
the interior. We quote middling at 24@24%c.
The following were the sales of the day: 241 at 24%,
453 at 24,319 at 23%, 144 at 23*, 97 at 23%, 112 at 23%,

INSURANCE BY STEAMERS OF THIS LINE, ONE
HALF PEE CENT.: .
JUSTUS LAWRENCE,
PRESIDENT.
Sea Island.—The demand has been fair—the mar
ket appears unsettled as yet. We give quotations af
ter this week if sales will permit Sales of the day:
10 bags at 66c, 32 at 60, 1 at 55, 3 at 54 and 4 at 53
Total, 60 bags.
The receipts to-day amount to 3,193 bales.
Financial.—Gold, buying at 134; selling at 136%;
New York exchange buying at % to %c off; selling
at % to % ct off. Sterling bills in demand at $144
@1 45.
Bacon.—We continue our quotations, and have
only to report a great scarcity in clear rib and ribbed
sides—a good inquiry for all other kinds. Holders
are firm, We quote shoulders at 14%@15%c, rib
sides at 17@17%c, and clear ribbed at 18%(§>18%c.
There, are few clear sides offering, and prices
are nominal at 18%@18%c. Hams are in large stock,
at 10@18c according to quality. Breakfast baoon
is quiet, with a downward tendency, at 19@20c. Dry
salted meats are in better demand. We quote shoul
ders at 13@13%c; short clear sides, 17@17%e; short
ribbed, 16@16%c; bellies, 15%@16%c, and Stratford
cut at 16c. .. ! : ‘ ; ( y •
Flour.—No change has taken place in prices
since our last report. The stock on the market is
large, and the demand light, but increasing. The feel
ing in Northern brands the same as our last report.
We quote Northern superfine, $650(5)9; extra, $9@11,
and family and fancy, $12@1300. Good Georgia and
Tennessee brands are in fair demand at $10 50@11 50
for superfine, $12(5)13 for extra, and $12 60@13 50
for family and fancy.
Grain.—The stock of Georgia and Tennessee old
corn is in small demand. New corn is coming in
very slowly and in small lots—demand light. We
quote ; Georgia corn $1 05 from depot, and scarce;
•Tennessee, $1 10@1 12%, and small arrive s—old
com from store, wholesale, $1 25. There has been
no chapge. in oats this weok; from depot 85@90; from
store, 95@$1 00.
Freights.—Foreign quiet. By sail to Liverpool 7-16
-on uplands. Timber nominal, offering at 36 shil
lings for hewn for Liverpool, 38 shillings to Queens
town for orders. Coastwise: To New York, % of a
cent J* lb on uplands; domestics, $1 00 $ bale; rice,
$2 60. By snsam to Philadelphia, %c ^ ft on uplands;
domestics, 75. To Baltimore by Bteam, %; by sati, nom
inal; by steam to Liverpool X of a cent ft on cot
ton; to'Havre 1 cent gold ^4 lb on cotton. Cotton
by steam through to Boston, l%c ^ ft. With quite a
number of arrivals, there is no diminution in freight
offerings. We see no reason to look for a de
cline in lumber and timber freights, but with the
large - quant ity offering and few vessels on the way
unchartcred. an advance would seem more likely.
Several coastwise and West India freights have been
placed during the week at Northern ports, but few
vessels arriving unchartered, and vessels are still
wanted.. Rates coastwise are a shade firmer. To
West India ports, $9 60@12, in gold. To Balti
more, lumber, $10; Resawed and timber to New York,
