A Heavy Business.—We are not predis. posed to noticing firms in our local cplnmns, lut when vjfe Cjhserye a marked improvement in any particular, branch of trade, we feel that the interest of Savannah demands that atten tion should be called to it, for whatever brings business to aqe hoq^ e rfaturaily increases that id ofoera, either (jjrectlv qr" indirectly. In me early part of this year, Messrs, Thaxton, grews A Go., gentlemen from North CUrolina, emerienced in the tobacco business, opened a tobacco warehouse, dealing exclusively in the manufactured article, both chewing and smoking. Since that time, by strict atten tion to business, and by supplying a long-felt want for such a house, they have done a large and rapidly increasing trade, until to-day they keep in stock over fifteen hundred boxes 81" tobacco, ifith monthly sales averaging yearly twice that amount. W® dqubt whether any other house south of Bichmond can show such sales! Orders that were formerly sent to distant cities now stop here and are filled at as low prices and oh as favorable terms as can he bad even of the manufacturers. It is certainly an advantage to Savannah to have inch a firm. \ The Relief Law Unconstitutional^—In a number of cases before the City Court, dur ing the term jiist emTerl, the Belief Law pass ed by the Legislature of 1368, was sought to he brought to operate in favor of parties de fendant to suits. Judge Chisholm decided that the entire act was unconstitutional; but, as one or two cases in which the constitu tionality of this act, is concerned, are to be argued at the December term of the Snpreme Court, the .fudge allowed all cases in which fas belief act formed part of the proceedings to be continued until the decision of the highest judicial tribunal in the State upon that subject should be made known. Anniversary Celebration.—The Germania Steam Fire Engine Company celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of its formation yester day. Its members kept holiday daring the Jay, and in the evening they gave a grand “all, at St Andrews' Hall, which was largely attended by members and guests. The lady mends of the company were there in force, »nd it was quite a gay affair. The dancing Fas kept up until a very late honr, and every body appeared to be enjoying the occasion, fhe Germania is one of the oldest and best companies in the Deparfmeat, and’is de servedly popular. An Important Correction.—In an article feea<J e 4 ‘ fan unwilling voyager,” which ap- petted iq yesterday's paper, we stated that th e tug which tovyeq ti}e ship Emerald fade to »ea, dropped off leaving the pilot who took the ship out on board. We learn from Capti »• K. Bichardsqn, the captain of the Ajax, the tug which towed the vessel to sea, that w heu between the bar and gea buoy, he let go the ship’s hawser and sent his bout for the Mpt .hut he ({he pilot) from some cause or Other, would not leave the ship, and the boat ponld not catch the vessel. 4 Mammoth Fotatoe,—Messrs. John W, Andersons' Sons A Co., sent to our counting room yesterday, a mammoth potato, weighing 10; pounds. It was grown on the farm of Vf. 7,' s hjith, ESq., Levy county, Florida. Gilbert and his excellent troupe for seeming neglect of ihern. The performance closed at Mch a late hour on Tuesday night that we were.compelled to leave out our notice of it, m order to have the forms made up and worked off in time to get onr Tri-Weekly edi- ***£ raa 6y for the mail. The performance of tit ■® ar ^ 00< > on Tuesday evening, was one . yhe finest dramatic entertainments ever witnessed here. Miss Thompson wasunu- irming, and her impersonation of ter of “ Anny," was Bimply superb. Last night The Hunchback was performed before a large audience, composed of our best people, and, by the way, the prejudice against theatrical exhibitions is fast wearing off, be fore the many excellencies of the troupe which Mr. Gilbert has brought here for the winter season. In a little time we hope to see the theatre" crowded. every liight with as good an audience as is usually brought out by an opera or concert. There are some careful, capital actors among the members of this company, and their performances furnish delightful entertainments, which cannot fail to please. The play last night went off remarkably welL It could not have been done much better by a metropolitan company. Miss Thompson was splendid, os she always is, and the company rendered her efficient support The orchestral performances were very fine, and the music is now one of the marked features of the entertainments at the Theatre. Onr people should render to Mr. Gilbert a liberal patronage, and enable him to successfully conduct the theatre during a brilliant season. We would suggest to him, however, to have the house kept a little warmer than it has yet been. It reqnires a good deal of fortitude to sit through a play there, on a cold night, unless the place is properly heated. Miss Thompson will appear this evening in the great play of The Foundlhyj of Paris. As an afterpiece, the very laughable farce of Four Life’s in Danger is announced. Jurors for the Next Superior Court— There having been no jurors drawn at the last term of the Superior Court to serve at its next session, the Ordinary, yesterday, exer cising the powers vested in him when the Inferior Court was abolished, proceeded to draw Grand and Petit Jurors for the Januniy term (1869) of the Superior Court. Men and women, especially those in whose veins courses the young, warm blood Of un mature years; will fall in love with each other; and without looking into the conse quences, go it blinc(, fts the saying.is, regard less of wl$t may happen in the future. Love, like strong drink, is no respecter of persons, and brings within its influence the high and low, the rich and poor alike, It’s bom in the child, and develones with oath succes sive year, unjil if hursts, forth in an uncon- trollable current, A youth belonging to one; of the good fam ilies of Savannah fell in love with a maiden of low degree, and she ardently returned his affections. 'They loved each other fondly, devotedly, with all their hearts. They loved “not wisely bnt too well.” The maiden was unable to resist the fascinations of her lover, and in an evil honr they were not delivered from temptation. The ardor of thd young uiru commenced to cool, and he no longer paid such frequent visits to the girl, who had fallen from the path of virtue by his act. Finally be deserted her entirely, and she pined away in silence and mourned his absence. A short time ago she became a mother, and then her friends determine^ to take some action in the matter. A Justice of tliO Beace was applied to yes terday, and a warrant issued, which soou brought the faithless lover to terms. Glad to get .out of the difficulty in any way, he made propositions for a compromise, which were accepted, and some little reparation made for the injury. Wanted Dad’s Picter.—The Augusta Na tional Republican Ls responsible for the follow ing, wlyeb, comes home to somebody: A friend of onr relates that whilst in Eyan’s Photographic" Gallery, Savannah; lately, an honest countryman presented himself, when the following conversation took place : ‘I wish you to take my father’s picture, said he.’ ‘Was your father ever photographed here V asked Dan. ‘Not that I know of.’ ‘Well, bring him as soon as you like.’ ‘But I can’t,’ rejoined the countrymen, wiping away a tear; ‘he died a fortnight ago.’ ‘Wiry didn't you say so at once?' exclaimed the photographer. ‘Youhave a picture of him, of course?’ -If I had, what should I want of another?’ an swered the countryman. ‘Here is a descrip tion of him, ’ drawing a paper from his pocket, •and try to make it as like him as you can.’ Dan caved. • The New Uniforms fob the Police Force. We stated on Monday last that new unifonn suits for the police force had been received. The men are now making their appearance upon the streets in their new outfit, and at tract much attention. It is quite an im provement upon the old style, being neat, showy and tasty. The uniform consists of a single-breasted frock coat, with brass buttons, and light bine pants, with a scarlet cord down the sides of the legB. The uniform for the officers is the same, except- that the coat is double-breasted and more plentifully supplied with brass buttons. New belts have also been ordered for the force, and when they are received the men will be newly equipped out and out. Election of Officers.—At a meeting of the Metropolitan Steam Fire Engine Company, held at their Hall last evening, the following ’ named person^ were : unariimously elected as officers of the organization for the ensuing President-T. United Stales Circuit Court.—A short session 6f the United States Circuit Court was held yesterday morning, but no business was transacted, save the passing of a few orders of no public interest United Stales District Court—The United States District Court met at the usual hour yesterday morning. Iu the case of T. J Flynn, D f Macon, a pe- titron that he be declared a bankrupt filed by Amidon,' Crombie & Co., reported yester day, the jury rendered a verdict that the de fendant did not commit an act of bankruptcy as alleged in the petition, on the 6th of Au gust, 1868. Final discharges from bankruptcy were gmfftecl to David B. Tomlinson,; of Savan nah, Matthew L. Bryan, of Perry, Houston county Donald J. McDonald, and John Lee, of the firm of McDonald & Lee, of Quitman Brooks county, William Warner, of Savan nah, and James Bay, of Quitman county. The examination will also state whether there have been any omissions in the petition and sohedules on file. It is further ordered that the Clerk send a copy of this rule, under the seal of this Court, to each of the Begisters in Bankruptcy. The Court adjourned until ten o’clock this morning. mayor’s Court. Hon. E. C. Anderson, Mayor, Presiding. Wednesday, December 2, 1868. The Court was not overrun with business this morning, there being hut three cases up on the docket, as the result of the researches of the Police force during Tuesday night. Oscar Walsh was a sailor bold, Who would not do as he was told; Who was for whiskey rather the “wuss,” And on the Margaret raised a fuss. Oscar was arraigned for drunkenness and disorderly conduct; and when asked what he had to say his memory suddenly failed him, and he remembered nothing of what be had done. He was ordered to pay five dollars and costs, to quicken his memory. Edward Brannon, also* sailor, went aboard the ship Nonpareil and announced his blood thirsty purpose to relieve the captain and mate of their lives and livers. He had his knife id his hand; and lest ho might proceed to carry the threat into execution a policeman was colled to take him in charge- His Honor consented to accept fives dollars and. costs from the prisoner, C. Adolfield, ‘ a professor of the art of roll ing tokaeco into smokeabio farm, went on a drunk, and was found lying in tbe street, to tally oblivious of sublunary events. The following names were takeu from the bos: j. r. Williamson, Michael Cleary, C. D. Rogers, William Coolidge, James F. Cann, Joseph F. Pelot, William West, B. B. Daven port, Daniel D. Arden, John A. The Equitable Life Assubance Society.— As several mistakes occurred in our notice of the above company, we republish it: We have frequently bad cause to comment upon the promptitude and generous acting which are characteristic of this Company, and it is with pleasure that we direct the atten tion of the public to another instance of the ready payment of a rjsk taken by this Com pany. The late William T. Wood, a well- known merchant of this city, held a policy for upwards of $20,000 in tbe Equitable, and the following letter shows that the snm called for was paid immediately npon demand: National Bank or Redemption, 1 BoatonpNov, 24th, 1868. f J. W. Alexander Secretary Equitable Life Assurance Society,.New York: Df.at. Very respectfully, yours, Ac., IV. D. Fokbeh, Guardian of Catharluo H. and Mary C. Wood. The Equitable is one of the moat reliable and safest companies in the United States. Its career has been marked by honorable, just, fair and equitable dealing. Its rates are as low as those offered by any, other company, and in all things appertaining to life aasnr- ance it takes the lead of many organizations and 'ranks with the best. It is oonducted upon a perfectly equitable system; pays an nually a large dividend to pollcyrholders; pays all losses promptly, and never has to be Bued for them. A better company cannot be found anywhere; -a safer organization in which to lay up treasure to provide for the support of a family when death has removed the one who taw cared and provided for them in ins lifetime. When such companies as the Equit able abonnd, it is criminal negligence on the part of any man to leave his wife or children in a state of poverty or indigence. A little money saved from the family expenses will pay the premium on an insurance policy; and in case of accident there -is then provision for the family support. Mr. Langdon Bowie, 88 Bay st, is agent for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in this city. Persons who desire to insure their lives would do well to call upon him and take out an Equitable policy. Magistrates’ -Courts.—Business was very slow again yesterday. There appears to be so little crime stirring in the city now, that Magistrates and- Constables find but little to do, except to look after their chances for a re-election to office. Held to Bail.— Kate Flynn wfts brought before Justice Smith yesterday h wurpnt charging her with ail assault and battery and breach of the peace. She was held to bail for her appearance at the next term of the City Court. . Sale of the Market Stalls.—The stalls in the Market were yesterday sold by the City Mdi-abnl to the highest bidders, ffbere was considerable competition, and some of the stands sold pretty high.
