Ora Weekly Scbscbiptionh.—The Charles ton .Veins commends our plan of weekly sub scriptions to the Morning News. It has/tried it with great success, and declares the system to be decidedly the best one for the city cir culation of a daily paper. By this means our subscribers pay for what they get, and are never in debt to us. Besides, it comes much easier to pay a small sum each week than a large one every few months. We invite the people of Savannah to send in their names to ns, aud the Morning News will be left with them in any part of the city; and ,tte twenty- fire cents collected every week. There are many people who have never token a paper who can easily afford to do so under this plan. Amusing.—Lieutenant Wray, as Chief of the Detective force in this city, is frequently in receipt of circulars, handbills, Ac., from other parts of the country, giving potice of crimes committed there, descriptions of the supposed offenders, aud offering rewards for their arrest. Some of them are very amusing, either by reason of their curious wording, or the absurdity, of sending them here. Not long since the Chief received a notice, which came from the extreme northwestern part of Ohio, offering a reward of five dollars for the recovery of an old mule and the capture of the fellow that stole him. As the distance between the point where stolen and this city is rather extensive, we doubt if the mule ever lived through it, even if the thief came in. this direction. A few days ago some bonds were stolen .iu New York, 'and a circular was received from the losing parties, in which, alter the bonds were named and numbered, a description of the supposed thief was given, upon which we dety* any detective to catch him. The circular said that helm'd ‘‘a mouth like a cat fish, and looked like, an insurance agent.” The affair was referred to a well known n^ent here for him to furnish the points by which an insurance agent might be'recognized from “any other man.” T * Discharged from Custody.—Nearly three weeks ago,' a negro named Abram Wingfield, was arrested for participation hi the murder of Mr. Samuel Law, on ,the Ogeechee road, on the night of the third of November. It being considered necessary to keep the fact of the arrest perfectly quiet, in order that the ends of justice might be attained, a particu lar request was made to the press of the city not to mention it. We adhered strictly to our agreement; while parties, who in our presence, promised to say nothing about it, published the fact. The consequence was that other parties concerned in the affair, kept out of the way of the officers, who were thereby unable to procure testimony against the man they had arrested, or to secure the members of the gang who did the firing upon the party of white men, and killeclJLaw. AYingtield has been in.ja.il for, seventeen days. His friends'procured A. W. Stone to aeTas iris.ittorriey,. and-ah examination iu the .case was demanded. The prisoner was brought before Justices Marsh and Connell yesterday, and, there being no evidence whatever against him, the magistrates had no option but to order hjs discharge, and he was consequently set at liberty. Thk Bace of Thursday Decided Yester day.—It will be remembered by our readers that we stated In onr report of the trotting race at the Central Course, which took place qq Thursday afternoon, that owing to the darkness the fifth heat was not run, and the race left undecided! Yesterday afternoon, at three o’clock, the deciding, beat come off. The track was very heavy, owing to the lain, and not in proper condition for a good race; and in consequence of the bad weather there were but few spectators present. The two horses, the b. m- Fannie and the s. m. Fan nie entered by Flyim arid AVard, were brought out on the track, and under the circumstances trotted well. The bay mare came m winner, in 3114. - Having won two heats the first day this heat made her winner of the race and purse. Time made in the three heats, 3 06 3*11,3:114. Considering the condition of the track, this trotting was very fair. The Theatre—Benefit of ATths Cuxb- lotte Thompson.—Last evening Ansa char ‘lotto-Thompson had a benefit, at tlie-Tbeatre, aud one of the largest and finest audiences ever brought^out by a dramatic performance, witnessed her fifth appearance this season. She appeared first in the sterling play of Hick and Poor, and afterwards as “Lady Freelove” in A Day After the Wedding, a sprightly two act comedy. Her acting was grand, and called forth enthusiastic applause irom the audience. The members of the stock company did their best in support of the “Star,' and their acting was worthy of all commendation. . For this eyemng‘ s .performance the mana ger has announced theprografeihe as-Tollows: Lyjomar to be followed* by the. roaring,-rat tling afterpiece of Toodles. In the first named Mian Thompson Will make her last ap pearance for this season, Wp must again appeal to onr citizens to bestow a more liberal patron A upon the Theatre. The manager’s expenses are.very heavy, and it requires good houses.to pay them. AVe need a permanent public amuse ment of good character here, and such a one Mr. Gilbert has provided. He should meet with generous support from the people, and I thus be enabled to present' novelties and at tractions such as we have- not had -iri many years. It becomes our people to prove the falsity of the assertion that they cannot ap- preciatefenything bhtt'a eireusTby attending the entertainments at the Theatre, which are of a character worthy of liberal support. The audiences thus far have been composed of our best people, and we hope that during the coming week every 6eat in the house mav .be filled. J ’aytobe'Built at ONCE—AVe are glad to be able to an nounce this morning that the Directors of the Savannah, Skidaway and Seaboard Rail road Company, have acceded to the popular demand to have at least one line of the street railway built and in operation before going farther with the work upon the Seaboard railroad, and, yesterday, ;tho contract, was given out to Messrs. Bradley & Callahan, who have constructed the road bed from here to Isle of Hope, Ac., to build aud equip the railroad on AVhit&ker street, from the Bay to the point on the southern outskirts of the city, where a lot was donated to the compa ny, to erect a depot upon, by David B. Dil lon, Esq. Messrs. Bradley & Callahan obli gate themselves to famish material, roils, cars, mules, and labor, and have the road in operation shortly. Their men, who ore now at work upon the Vernon river bridge, will be remored front there for the preserit, arid put at work, upon the AVhitaker street line, as soon as the wood aud iron work cari^be got here. There is only; a Uttie over a mile of track to be put down, and' with a proper force of men at work upon it, the road'Shquld -bfe huflt in a few days; and the cars'ohgbt to be running by the first of January. -This simple Hue, from the Bay to beyond the Park, will, we hope, prove to be such a great publio accommodation that the other lines through the city will also be built very speedily. The Custom House.—About a year ago the Chief Architeot of the Treasury Department. jjg the Custom House in this city. It has taken him a whole year to make up a re- portto ihe effect'that'tiie building ‘needs re pairing. At- this rate of'doing 'things, the third generation from this may see the repairs commenced, and, then, lest the work might i with A ^ . e'orge AVinkler, a re Presentative of the celebrated African ***** bad & difficulty with one. of his own j 9 or > n «ne4 AJac Cplepjan, whon} he jieat ■ a shocking manner, with a board. Lindner, situated on the comer of Indian aud Fahm streets, and demauded to see that offi cer. On coming to the door policeman Lind ner was seized by Fitzpatrick and a man named Owen McHugh and beaten terribly. After, they had accomplished their purpose the two fellows ran off. Yesterday warrants were issued agaipst tijem by Jnahoe Hart, and they were arrested qud. brought before that magistrate, who committed the two to ^1 tri await trial by the Chty Quart, for as sault and battery and breaoh of the peace. It is printed very handsomely. are for a cop; structione from out of the river, where they still remain, so that iu case the country is ever involved in another war, the channel of the Savannah may be easily blocked up.’ The Custom House needs repairing in some f arts of it very badly, and the work should e done at once; but, while the Treasury De partment is so Burrounded by red tape as at present,* there is but little hope of prompt ness. It'is a wonder that all those who are compelled to be in the building are not af flicted with consumption. It was as damp as an underground dqngeon there yesterday, so damp that the water trickled-down the inner walls* and staircases. The Custom House is a firie building, and shdiild’be pre served iu good condition.' Thf Columbus Swindler.—Henry A. Gil bert, of whose arrest for passing himself off as an internal revenue officer, and attempting to swindle liquor dealers of Columbus, of which an account appeared in the Morning News at the time “of the occurrence, yester day plead guilty to the offence charged against him, in the United States District Court, and was sentenced by Judge Erskine to pay a fine of one hundred dollars, and be imprisoned iri the State Penitentiary, at Mii- ledgeville, for nine months—about-as light a sentence as the law would permit. Gilbert was considerably affected when sentence was passed upon him. He was a very good ap pearing man, and made quite a favorable im pression upon the Court. He desired to make some explanation of the matter, but Judge Erskine stated to him that the Court had uo right to hear his explanation, and it was not mode, therefore. AVe presume that he will be sent to the Penitentiary in a few days. ‘ !_ r, !««--, Betubned to Port.—The steamship Flor ida, temporarily chartered as a freight boat, to supply the place of the - Marmiori, ,pn the popular Black Star Uue, bleared from this port for New York, on AVednesday evening. AVhen she was about twenty-five miles north east of Martin's Industry light, the engineer reported the crank pin loose, owing to which the vessel was obliged to make, a- harbor. There being a very heavy northeast gale raging at the time, Capt. Faireloth deemed it prudent to return to Savannah rather than undertake to make Charleston. The ves sel arrived up at her wharf at Demund’s up per press yesterday morning. She will be repaired and will proceed ori her journey at once. AVe are indebted to Purser Brainerd for the above particulars. F . —Sirip 'pr-'~ ' F T I Flood in Washington AVabd. —Owing to the fact that there is bo fence around AVash- ington square, the street is rapidly encroach ing upon the square. On Thursday evening a drayman, driving aronnd the square at a rapid rate, ran into the fire plug on the Bryan street side with 6uch force as to break it off The water ran into the street ail .during’ Thursday night and yesterday morning, 'and flooded oil the cellars and, basements of dwellings along Bryan street, and also several streets. A new hydrant was. put in about noon, and the flow of. water-Stopped, but not until considerable damage had been done. — m Mortar Mixed with Blood.—A house is being erected in the western portion of the city, for the upper portion of the;walls of which the mortar has been mixed with blood. The matter creates considerable speculation as to the why and wherefore of this curious proceeding. It may be that a famine is ap prehended in the future, in case of which the occupants of the house can chisel out the mortar and'make sonp of.it. AVe -Should think that the ghosts of beeves and. bullocks, whose blood is upon the walls, would haunt the place. A Beaky BoaF,-^The roof bf theDxchange building appeared yesterday to have been made after the pattern of a 'serve. ^During the heavy fall of rain in the morning the water came through the roof in such cmanti- ties as to cause the gentlemen in the office of. the water works company, on the third floor, to vacate the premises; and it rail from thence, - through the floor and ceiling, dowri into the long room, where it formed a small-sized- duck pond. The place should be repaired at once. ■ . . Dead Body of a Neoro -FoV^Pi—fieed b °4}’ af ft negro Wffl 'm found by some gentlemen lying alongside . of the AVlnte Bluff road, on Monday last. The matter was not brought to the attention of the Coroner until Thursday, when he ascertained that the bodv had been buried, but could not find out who the dead man was, or the cause of his death. ■ ~ y .,, ,—L -r~A. The prisoner requested to see the United States District Attorney, aud, after a few minutes conversation with that gentleman, and with his counsel, be came forward and stated to the Court that he would plead guilty to the charge against him. The Judge then announced to him that the next term of the Court would bo held in February uext. and read the law prescribing the penalty for the offence, which stated that a person found guilty of such an offence should be sentenced to “pay a fine of not less, than one hundred nor more than five hnudred. dollars, and be imprisoned for not less thaii' six months nor more thnn two years.
