selections of offering stock was poor, market closed
unsettled, with middlings at 23c. The following were

The receipts to-day amount to 2,364 bales.
Financial.—Gold, buying at 134; selling at 137;
New York exchange buying at * to *c off; selling
at * to * ct. off. Sterling bills in demand at

Bacon.—The demand for bacon has continued good
at high figures caused altogether-by a great scarcity in
the market Many of our dealers are declining to
buy, except to fill orders, awaiting the decline to come
when new meats are thrown on the market. We
quote shoulders at 14*@15*c, rib sides at 17
@17*c, and clear ribbed at 18*@18*c. There
are few clear sides offering, and prices are
nominal at 18*@l£*c. Hama are in luge stock,
at 10@18c according to quality. Breakfast bacon
is quiet, with a downward tendency, at 19@20c. Dry
salted meats are in better demand. We quote shoul
ders at 13@13*c; short clear sides, 17@17*c; short
ribbed, 16@16*c; bellies, 15*@16*c, and Stratford

the S. E. off Hatteras—was compelled to heave too,
